Neverwinter Nights 2: Mysteries of Westgate is a strange little expansion only available for download as far as I know and was originally supposed to come out before Storms of Zehir but for whatever untold reason, was pushed back quite some time. What was released from Ossian Studios falls between a really well built fan made mod and an unfinished professional release. I guess which was I choose to look at it would determine the scoring. I personally see it as a 15 hour romp that throws out some cliché RPG conventions yet feels a bit unfinished all together.

The game starts out saying the player character came into possession of some cursed mask and has traced its origin to a gang so the plot involves getting rid of a cursed mask and that's pretty much it. During this time the player will do a lot of small side missions that have nothing to do with the main story and also partake in the awful artificial game lengthening portion to raise money to afford help from a character.

Money raising is one of two RPG clichés I dislike the most right next to "Gather all these rare ingredients to stop the evil bad guy so that the antagonist can show up and steal them all." The other problem I have with the plot is the mask isn't all that bad. I mean if it is equipped, it damages the player but the truth it only needs to be equipped a few times during the story if that. Now I guess if I had a little piece of cloth that was always in my possession, then that would be a bit annoying but truth be told, it's not worth risking a life over and it sure as hell doesn't make a compelling story. Also the amount of side missions and the fact that they are often a bit more creative than the main story also detracts from the storyline.

Another thing that gives this production a low budget feel is the sporadic voice work and the dated visuals. I think the game being on hold for so long is the reason this game looks like the earlier NWN 2 game without patches or expansions but the voice acting, while pretty good, seems to be randomly placed. It's hard to explain but it just seems strange to have only a partial voiced over story or characters outside of cutscenes.

So poor story, dated graphics and strange voice-overs are the bad. The combat and character building still has all the depth of the D&D universe so that has to count for something. The main reason to play through this game isn't just the price though; it's the characters and the creative side quests.
Many times in an RPG, a character will ask you to do something for them; you'll do it and get rewarded. This game tosses aside that basic honestly and comes up with either some creative missions or dishonest quest givers that take off as soon as you accomplish their goals. These small changes aren't genre changing or wholly original, it's just that they are so underused that it's refreshing to see an NPC rip off the player characters or just ask for something totally strange. These quests add bits of humor to an otherwise below average plot.

The character interaction between party members and the player characters is also something I didn't expect in a small add on such as this. The party is somewhat interesting but it's the way you can change them that is the most lasting memory I have of this game. There's a character in mind that has some realistic philosophies in general and it was great that I was able to manipulate them and change the person to see views my way just from simple dialogue. In the end it made the character do a 180 and pretty much changed the outlook the character had on life.

In the end the game is an add-on much like one would find on Steam, PSN and XBL for about the same price as an overpriced map pack. Sure the expansion is made by a professional company and lacks the polish one would expect from an add-on but it does have its charm and any fan of NWN 2 should give it a shot.
