If you're familiar with the worlds and inhabitants of Neopia, Neopets: The Darkest Faerie is definitely worth your time.

I've been playing Neopets for over 5 years, and call me childish but ever since I heard that there was a PS2 game in the making, I knew I would be playing it. Neopets: The Darkest Faerie provided me with the first 3D rendering of the adorable Neopian creatures and surprised me in many good ways.

In Neopets: The Darkest Faerie, you set out to save Neopia from the dark hands of the Darkest Faerie by gaining control of Tormund, a brave Lupe knight, and Roberta, a skilled Acara mage.

This is a single player action/adventure 3D journey much in the likeness of any 3D Zelda game you may have played. There's a lot of hack and slash to be done, some platform gameplay involved and you even slash the grass with Tormund's sword to find Neopoints (the game's currency).

The world is quite large and the areas are very different. You will visit farmlands, a medieval castle and town, dark spooky forests, ghostly ruins, ancient dungeons and the ever so popular Illusen's Glade. The inhabitants are as diverse as the areas you find them in. You will recognize all your favorite pets: Scorchios, Lupes, Aishas, Skeiths and many others. You will find adorable petpets like Whinnies, Draconacks, Noils, Mortogs, Spyders and others, and each can prove to be a useful companion or a fierce adversary. You will come across all kinds of Mote magic of different elemental properties to use on your weapons and tons of items like Chokatos, Bagguses, Juppies, Treasure Maps and Neggs. Last but not least, there is a lot of lore to be found in every book that can be read.

In sum, pets, petpets, places and items have been beautifully and colorfully represented in full 3D. Every new thing I came across was worthy of an exclamation, be it a new area, a Mote, a Noil, a Whinnie, a different type of Juppie or pretty much any character and NPC in the game. I also lost count as to how many times I let out "Aw, so cute!"

The animations are nicely done, especially in the FMV sequences, the music is really great, the loading times between areas are minimum and the sheer amount of quests to do and items to find will keep you busy for a long time.

I did have a problem with the game though, and this was a first for me considering the tons of things I play. Playing The Darkest Faerie for more than an hour would make me nauseous every single time. It would start as a bit of dizziness after about 30 minutes of gameplay, developing into a migraine, turning into serious nausea. Some people have told me it could be the colorful moving environment, but for colorful and moving we have Katamari Damacy, and I have never felt sick playing that. The reason remains a mystery, but it's a recurring incident every time I pick up the game.

That aside, if you are familiar with the different worlds and inhabitants of Neopia, Neopets: The Darkest Faerie is definitely worth your time. If you're not familiar, you will probably find this review extremely confusing and are now wondering what the hell a Mote, a Negg or a Noil are. In either case, it's a solid game that everyone can and will more than likely enjoy.
