Alex Kidd headlines EU VC releases

New titles from Master System, C64, and NeoGeo added, including Sega's Alex Kidd in Miracle World.

The Wii's Virtual Console has enjoyed a steady stream of releases since launch, with 223 titles now available in Europe. Today, Nintendo is adding some more retro titles to the mix with the announcement of five new releases that hark back to the days of Sega's Master System, the Commodore 64, and SNK's NeoGeo.

Sega fans will be happy to know that Alex Kidd in Miracle World, which was originally released back in 1986 and even hard-coded into certain Master System consoles, is available for download now at the price of 500 Wii points.

Other new releases include the Commodore 64 offerings Nebulus and Last Ninja 2 (which joins its predecessor, originally released in April). Both are priced at 500 Wii points.

SNK's original fighter, Fatal Fury, was released on the Virtual Console in October last year, and its first follow-up has now been reborn on the Wii. Fatal Fury 2 and fellow NeoGeo title Ninja Combat are priced at 900 Wii points.

Ninja Combat has already been launched in the US, but Nintendo of America has yet to release any of the other new titles announced today.

This is why I haven't bought anything on the VC:
Alex Kid MW, a great game (a nugget of gold from my childhood) but not worth $5. For all of the Alex Kid games, that might be a good price.

i think alex kid for the master system was better than the genesis version. Download it and see for yourself. Better levels and design.

The Virtual Console and BC with GameCube games are THE reasons to own a Wii. I loved Alex Kidd on Genisis. Hell, I still own and play ye ol' Genisis. Damn, I want a Wii.....

I really hope they bring back Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle (GEN)! That game was so much fun and had such a charming look and feel to it.

I used to have one of the consoles this was "hard-coded" into. We used to call it 'built in'. All you had to do was turn on the console with no cartridge in the slot and Alex Kidd would boot up, as if by magic. Good times. I might buy it just to play the rock, paper, scissors game again.

And you all thought the original Mega Man box art was bad! In any case, Alex Kidd was the closest (some would argue too close) that we Master System owners could get to having a Super Mario Bros. type platformer. Thankfully it was a great game. Not as good as SMB mind you, but it got the job done. And he continued to do so with other SMS and Gensis games until Sonic arrived and sent poor Alex off into the mascot sunset.
