What is the most important thing in a good racing game? Most of us would say control and physics, and they're both good answers. There have been many racing games in the past where the smooth control was what made the game fun to play, no matter how polygonal the graphics might have been or how linear the gameplay was. Therefore, it's sad to see a racing game where the developers spent too much time making sure it looked and sounded good rather then handling good.

V- Rally features 42 tracks taking place all over the globe and 11 cars, and plays just like Sega Rally or Ridge Racer. You're main goal is to be the first one among several other competitors to cross the finish line.

If there's one thing that looks good, it's the graphics. While the textures on the cars might seem a bit angular, the background scenery is very detailed. Crowds are standing by cheering as you drive past them; building have a good amount of detail and it looks great overall.

With all this going for it, it's a real shame that V-Rally's controls are total grime. No matter which one of the 11 cars you pick, they all turn like they're carrying six elephants in their trunk. This means that you'll often be forced to almost stop the car entirely just so you can make a really tight curve. As if that wasn't bad enough, just a tiny impact with anything usually results in your car completely losing its grip of the road or even overturning in a way that would make Isaac Newton spin around in his grave.

On a positive note, the music in V-Rally is good. With its rock-and-roll style soundtrack, it has that Destruction Derby feeling to it. However, that's the closest this game comes to being as great as Destruction Derby.

Our lesson here is that it doesn't matter how great a game looks or sounds if it doesn't play well. Play Ridge Racer or Gran Turismo and you'll see for yourself. V-Rally might not be the worst racing game ever made, but it's certainly not worth your money.
