Need for Speed Pro Street wasn't a mass hit, but the DS version is surprisingly good.

After the mixed reactions to Need for Speed Pro Street on PC and nextgen consoles, it was hard to believe that the DS version can be any better. When I got it for Xmas last year, I thought of returning it to store, but I gave it a chance, and it didn't disappoint me.

The graphics of the game is pretty good compared to the DS, it's one of the best I've seen from 3rd party developers. The draw distance, what is a problem in most DS games, is also pretty nice, making it a visually acceptable ride.
The soundtrack from the console versions made it in the DS version too, and it wasn't bad in the first place. It doesn't stick out from the style of the game. The quality of the music is pretty high, I didn't notice any difference between it and the nextgen versions.
The game is about legal street-tuner-racing on (supposedly) real tracks, and it does exactly what it should. There are normal races, time trials, drag and drift races. While normal races are pretty enjoyable and tenseful, drift, and even more, drag races can be a real pain in the back, especially if you aren't used to them, since the DS's Pentium1-class CPU can't handle as complex tasks as drift simulation. What ruins the drag races are the controls, that do quite well in normal races, but not in moments where utmost precision is needed. Since the DS has no analog input device, throttle and brake is a little hard to manage, but the game manages to get over it.

To sum everything up: Even if you didn't enjoy NFS:Pro Street on PC, X360 or PS2/3, you should give it a try on the DS. And if you enjoyed other versions: definitely play this one, because it is (in my opinion) the best of all versions.

The good: decent on the technical side - most races are enjoyable - great soundtrack - lot of content
The bad: DS's lack of button controls shows - not much extra - drag and drift races can be annoying.
