Not only is Name That Tune! fun, it's a really good idea, too. The game, named after the classic TV show, but bearing little other resemblance, gives you the opportunity to win free ringtones for your phone. To win, simply answer seven questions correctly in one round, in the category of your choosing, about songs, artists, and other related topics. There's not a lot to the game, but it's continually entertaining, is always changing content, and has a very worthwhile reward.
At the start of Name That Tune! you must pick a music category from a list of 13, including love songs, the '80s, country, modern rock, and hip-hop. The game will download the latest music pack from that category, which has a ton of different songs and is constantly updating. Each of the seven questions will begin with a clip from a song, which you can listen to for up to 25 seconds. Generally you'll be asked to name the tune, but don't be surprised if the questions ask you something about the band, the band's origin, or the year of the song's release. If you get all seven questions correct, you have the opportunity to download one of the songs from this category onto your phone for free.
The presentation is pretty bare-bones, but it doesn't need to be complicated when you're dealing mostly with the sound. The menus could have been a little neater, and it would have been nice if there were an option to pick or personalize your own avatar, but the current setup doesn't affect gameplay either way. The music is the most important part of the game, and it comes across quite nicely. The songs are all polyphonic MIDI, and they vary in quality. Although none of the music is MP3 quality, it all sounds pretty similar to the original songs. On the LG VX7000, there were a few problems with the volume of the game without a headset. Because the game can get quite loud, at the very least it would have been nice to have the ability to manipulate the sound levels in-game. Otherwise, the game is entertaining and well worth the reward. If you're a fan of modern music, you're likely to have a lot of fun with this game.
