Bugs and sloppy controls detract from a good kids title

User Rating: 5 | The Mysterious Cities of Gold: Secret Paths PC

Reviewing the Mysterious Cities of Gold at this point is an odd experience. The show the game is based on has not been released yet in the US, and without the context of that show, the story jumps oddly from place to place. Like most TV/Movie tie-in games, it seems we're playing through the space between scenes, though each chapter is bookended by cut scenes (that I assume are from the show) to give the player a sense of what is going on.

The gameplay is just about right for the intended audience. My kids were excited to play as Zia, Tao, and Esteban after watching the first season of the show on Hulu. The puzzles are easy enough for elementary school, though younger kids might need some help reading the dialog.

The toughest enemy is the game is usually the controls. On the PC the game seemed to be one click slow. Just as I give up and click again, the screen moves to follow the characters and my second click would be off target. Also the hitboxes for some objects are a bit off...at the bottom of a column instead of on the glowing top is for example. Maybe this would be easier with a finger on a tablet instead of with the precision of a mouse.

The control issues along with some bugs in the menus were just distracting enough to keep me from getting fully invested in a story that I could barely follow.

FINAL RECOMMENDATION: Wait for the patch that will probably come out about the same time as the show. I expect it will be a much better experience.
