I have been playing this particular MX series since the first MX Unleashed and have loved it. I was so excited for this game that I didn't even bother renting it before buying..boy was I wrong to do that. I myself also ride and have always enjoyed the previous games but this one was sooo not what I thought it would be. I had very high expectations for this game. Played the demo and thought it would be pretty good. The new engine with the "Rider Reflex" seemed interesting and something new. But clearly they did not do enough testing before release. The physics and realism is HORRIBLE! Its a step in the right direction, but so poorly done. For one, while controlling the rider and the bike separately is a good idea, its much to sensitive and unforgiving. You fly off the track, skid out, and bounce around so easily that you cannot keep your bike under control. Yes yes, I know, you are probably saying "You noob, stop using the Reflex so much and you'll be fine!". Well I tried that and still, it is just plain garbage. And the AI....the worst I have seen from this series. Other riders constantly run you off the track, T-bone you in corners, land on your head, and screw up so badly that you cant help but plow into them, crashing yourself as they just ride away unscathed. Using Reflex to save a fall was an interesting concept except for the fact that it does not work realistically at all. When you fail to preform it, you basically either fall to the ground through your bike, glitch from being on your bike, to the side of it on the ground, or just straight up. It is anything but realistic. It is just corny and stupid looking.
The choice of gear and accessories is modest, but always could be better. A couple manufacturers only have a few colors to choose from (Shift). Which is just pathetic. And the only bike manufacturer available...KTM...no Kawasaki, no Suzuki, no Honda, not even Yamaha...What the hell is up with that? There is no legitimate excuse for that at all! I want to ride the real manufacturer, not some stupid bike they come up with a name for, paint it green and try to pass it off as a Kawasaki. And PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!! Get rid of the other vehicles! Just make it MX, ATV, and Supermoto. That would be perfect. If you want to play with other vehicles, go play Dirt. They can actually do it correctly anyway. The other vehicles in this game are a complete joke and are not fun in the least.
Sound..well it was good in the other games. And the music you actually got to pick which songs did and did not play. Thats gone, and the music that does play is just terrible. Doing tricks? Well forget about having fun with that, the way it is set up is just ridiculous. Memorize 3 directions to move the stick for each trick and hope that the one you try to preform, actually works. Great idea!
So, with all the crap aside. Everything else is fine. This game had great potential, but instead of polishing up what matters and spending to much time on what sucks. Guess what you have? MX vs ATV Reflex!
