i found out i don't need the original to play this, if i just get this what if anything would i miss out on from the first?

The only thing you would miss really are the mods that never got ported to Warband, which there are quite a few of.

Warband does have a large selection of mods, just not as much as the original M&B.
IMO, the updated gameplay of Warband is worth missing a few mods for. Though you might want to pick up the original if some of it's exclusive mods have interested you.

Also, a Mount & Blade 2 has been announced. I don't think they've stated the release date yet, though.
