Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe Preview - First Look

Midway's newest entry in the MK series will shock you.

MK vs. DCU

Watch this unusual crossover game in motion.

You'd think that after 16 years and a bevy of installments, the Mortal Kombat series would have lost its ability to be shocking. The passage of time has seen the game evolve from now humble-looking digitized origins to the sleek, robust 3D models in 2007's Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. The fatalities, which were once a lightning rod of controversy, have grown along with the series and become a key part of the franchise's appeal. The series has become an institution that's managed to change with the times and keep its fans--and this is no mean feat. The downside to that kind of longetivity is that 16 years in the public eye makes it pretty hard to deliver a surprise. Of course, after spending some time with MK series creator Ed Boon, we've seen it's not impossible. The veteran developer dropped more than a few jaws with his announcement of the eighth entry in the series, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. Yep. That's right Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and the MK posse versus Superman, Batman, and familiar faces from the DC universe. And yeah, it's not going to be M-rated. How's that for some curveballs?

Before anyone starts citing this as a sign of the apocalypse, we'll suggest, as fans of the series ourselves, that everyone take a breath and keep an open mind. We were a little leery too but, after spending some time talking to Boon and getting a peek at a few things, we can say that there's a lot going on in MK vs. DCU. Once you get past the shock of the cape and tight set guest-starring in the fighter, you'll find that the game is the most ambitious reboot of the series since Deadly Alliance.

The game's story is still being kept under wraps but, generally speaking, a cataclysmic event causes the DCU and MK universe to start merging. This provides the perfect setup for the game's story mode, which will offer two perspectives on the situation. You'll be able to play through two separate storylines, one from each side, which lay out what the heck is going on. The cataclysm in the story is driven by magic, which is a handy device that is tapped for the gameplay. The mystic elements that run through the story help keep the fighting balanced as it helps make a conflict between Superman, whose only vulnerability is magic, and characters like Sub-Zero and Scorpion, actually make some sense. Boon stressed that balance is going to be a key element for the team to focus on, this time on several other levels. Besides gameplay balance, which we'll touch on in a second, the team is having to be conscious of balancing two sets of fan expectations. MK fans, a passionate and exacting bunch, definitely have some specific expectations on who should be in the roster. At the same time DC fans, an equally passionate bunch who've never really had the benefit of having their beloved characters appear in a very good game, will also have some expectations on who should be in the roster as well. We'll come clean and admit to seeing a lot more of the game's roster than has been announced and can say that there's a good mix of white and dark hats on both sides, as well as some surprises.

The other key element to the game is balancing the game mechanics to ensure the whole experience plays well. As if sweating the roster and story weren't enough, Boon and his ambitious team have opted to revamp the whole fighting system for MK's next gen debut. This has led to a "clean slate" approach that has the team re-examining every aspect of the combat system. While you'll see some hints as to what's going on with the fighting system in the teaser trailer, Boon himself offered us a clearer picture of what's going on. The multiple fighting styles and weapon systems from previous games are out, and a more-visceral, brutal approach to fighting is in. MK vs. DCU will introduce several new elements that the team is hoping will make battles more dynamic. The three major ones that are ready to be discussed are Klose Kombat, Freefall Kombat, and stage interaction. Klose Kombat is a mode you'll initiate which pulls in the camera in close and has its own separate mechanics. Basically, when you initiate the mode you'll be the aggressor and your opponent will be on defense. In this closer view you'll be able to attack your foe's upper body with different types of blows for a set period of time, the exact duration of which is still being ironed out. To keep things fair, your opponent will be able to perform a number of different defensive moves to dodge your attacks, provided they're fast.

Freefall Kombat is another change of pace, tied in part to stage interaction. The mode is another player initiated sequence which is kicked off by you flinging your foe off a stage. Unlike previous games you won't just follow them down or watch yourself drop. Instead the camera willl come in and you'll be able to fight on the way down. You'll have a slightly tweaked set of possible attacks in this mode, much like Klose Kombat. From what we've seen, it appears your big motivation in these sequences is to gain the advantage on the way down and land on your opponent, for an added damage bonus. Part of this mode is tied to the stages, which appear to feature a different basic design than the previous games. The fighting areas will be a bit wider, to support throwing your opponent through walls and, in some cases, much taller, to allow enough time for fighting during freefall. Since these new elements should definitely change the flow of battle, the team is spending a lot of time figuring out the right amount of time for them to last. In addition, the fighting moves of the MK cast are getting an upgrade to let them go toe-to-toe with established and powerful characters like Superman. A more potentially controversial change to the system is the game's fatalities. According to Boon, there will definitely be fatality-like finishing moves, but they may not be called fatalities. After all, it's doubtful that Superman or Batman would be ripping out anyone's spines or hearts. That said, the team is hellbent on pushing the limits to what they can do with the DC characters, so you can expect to see blood and some level of damage accumulate during a fight.

MK vs. DCU

Ed Boon discusses the upcoming game.

The visuals in the game benefit from a tweaked out Unreal III engine, which has allowed the art team to go to town. Scorpion and Sub-Zero have never looked better thanks to a high level of detail that shows off little touches like the stitching on their costumes. At the same time, the DC characters are looking super sharp. The game's art direction mixes the traditionally dark MK elements with the DC heroes pretty well so far. As we noted, the MK crew is looking the best they ever have. As far as the heroes go, Midway and DC are collaborating on tweaked designs and color palettes for the characters to ensure they fit into the overall look of the game. Comic fans should be pleased to hear that the team is looking at some of the iconic design work from Alex Ross, and other acclaimed artists who've put a distinctive stamp on the DC heroes, as inspiration. From what we've seen, it's paying off, as some of the unrevealed characters look fantastic. As far as the stages go, you can expect to see a mix of Mortal Kombat's traditional "Outworld" environments and iconic DC locales mixed together to serve the game's story.

Based on this first look, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe is going to mix things up in the MK franchise. The DC partnership aside, the changes to the combat system appear to be pretty sweeping and should present a new challenge for veteran players to master. The whole game is an ambitious undertaking and is definitely taking some risks with the series, but that may be exactly what's needed to keep it evolving. We'll be keeping a close eye on Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe in the months leading up to its release on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 later this year.

I'm a DCU fan, so I only hope there will be some good DC's heroes and villains characters to kick some MK's asses ;-P

shame on MK to make a childy girly game like this ! the D.C characters are so silly and with that huge number of characters which is 22 ,the characters would be so weak ,less fatalitis , no pits , less combos ,no animalaty ,no bability ,no friendship ,no brutality :( i am SURE THAT MK2 WILL HAVE MORE RATE THAN THIS GAME !!!

EVILSCOTSMAN96 5 pts

now about the t rating im upset about that in some respests im glad because like in deception one punche equals half a pint of blood its just not realistic enough so im happpy itn that respect but im worried that the fatalities will be to dimmed down guess il just wait andd see

EVILSCOTSMAN96 5 pts

ps this will be the best mk game yet by the looks of it.

EVILSCOTSMAN96 5 pts

how on earth can mk fans be worried about this.this is a brilliant move by mk i can honestly say its good to have a change in the story.16 years running thats quite a repetitive storyline not that im complaining theyve been good at keeping it varied.but always stopping outworld.its good to have a change.

Im pretty sure all of the "hardcore MK fans" would have more faith than all the whining i hear. If this game blows then all of the people complaining get the satisfaction of being right. But until the game comes out fans should stop being so hard on the MK people. Its not the end of the world. I understand comments that say you don't see what is going to be accomplished, but people who say MK is dead or they are ripping off the fans is BS. If the people who CREATED Mortal Kombat thinks its a good idea im pretty sure they have the ultimate right to change whatever they want.

what's with all the complaints about the T rating? seriously, Ed Boon already said that he'll push the T rating as far as possible without crossing the line. So we'll get a game with plenty of violence, but not over the top like the previous Mortal Kombat games. And besides, is there really a point in complaining about smaller amounts of blood/gore. If you guys want gore or blood, go play Manhunt, F.E.A.R, or Doom 3. You can see body bits, blood spattering, and even more horrible dismemberants of bodies. For me, as long as this game has: 1. Kick ass gameplay 2. Fatalities and/or Brutalities 3. Online Play then it's good enough for me for a Mortal Kombat game. and I like the fact that DC characters are inside. I always was a pretty big fan of DC. It was pretty much the only company who's comics I read on a regular basis. I've been a big fan of characters like Batman, Superman, the Flash, Green Latern etc. (you get the idea), and I'm glad that they finally can star in a fighting game (one of my two favorite genres of video games, the other is FPSes). Given, hardcore Mortal Kombat fans probably (actually certainly) will hate the idea (just as hardcore Godzilla fans hated the two original monsters in Godzilla Unleashed), but all in all, the game looks pretty badass, and deserves a whole lot more credit than what I've seen people giving it. If Ed Boon (one of the creators of Mortal Kombat) is enthusiastic about this idea, it should be at least bareable for you.

LordGeorgeton 5 pts

i just cant see this game going anywhere

score89 6 pts

not deadly kombat vs not very powerful heroes comics, this is an more accurate name for this game. sorry MK

Hellisunreal 5 pts

interesting stuff. hope it plays as good as it sounds.

TAO-SIM 5 pts

what is the point of not making it an M-rating,i mean every Mortal Kombat game has blood and gore moves and fatalities, i seriouly don't get the point and sense of this game it sounds great but sounds more weird ???

fourthgeartappe 5 pts

Well I can definitely say the MK I have grown to know and love since I was young is truly dead. I'm very disappointed that marketability is the only driving force behind this series now, and the market is clearly not the one that gave it its first huge success. I'm disgusted that this is even considered a Mortal Kombat title, it's nothing that the series represents anymore. If anyone needs me I'll be playing my genesis and my copy of MK2.

ukxxboi 6 pts

lol they shld of stuck with same old mortal combat lol ...fair play to trying sumthing new but dc ....D C ...come on...and wots with the teen rating...they mite as well add all the "pow" "Waaaam" Woolp" crap each time u land a punch....cant believe they making this...so this wot MK has come to ... talk about circling the drain...

diggyman 6 pts

WHAT? this doesnt make any sense. I dont think I really care to see comic book heroes getting their guts ripped out. Can someone please tell Capcom to make another MARVEL VS CAPCOM game. This slo-mo fighting is getting annoying.

DeadlyOnez 5 pts

make a tekken vs killer instincts or vs mk

DeadlyOnez 5 pts

"Superman, whose only vulnerability is magic" Now their making up stuff?

DeadlyOnez 5 pts

This game make as much since as mixing ketchup with milk. It doesn't make sense to do this ONE mk is so blah now and DC has yet to make a good game. MKvsDC= number1vsnumber2

Anteares 6 pts

A Mortal Kombat game not rated M isn't a Mortal Kombat game. And how do you end up merging hardcore MK with DC?....DC!? Not that DC is bad..but that's like putting Final Fantasy vs. Pokemon. "Scorpion vs. Robin"....FIGHT! (*vomits) "Raiden vs. The Riddler."....FIGHT! (*becomes disemboweled) "Liu Kang vs. Wonder Woman"....FIGHT! (*yawn...collapses in an eternal coma) GIVE ME A BREAK! I liked Deception and Deadly Alliance (yes, they could have been much better) but I MK Ultimate was the best...even though it was 2D. Armaggedon was a far cry from Ultimate (really...how lame and boring was that fatality system?). And now this fight within the fight junk...no thanks...please..no more dumbing down and candy coating what used to be the most brutal franchise concept in gaming history.

Testament 5 pts

hell naw, first off, MK needs to make there charcters fight more fluid and not so damm stiff. They all fight like they got something stuck up there ass. MK1, II, III was kool. In my option i think MK utimate was the best. It had the best combos, all the characters, and brutalality which was HELLA KOOL. Like Marvel Vs Capcom, they realize that the street fighters need to be faster and jump higher to compete with there super mavel foes; and the outcome became one of the best cross over to this date. I think the MK vs DC is a great ideal but Ed Boom needs to change up the fighting stiyles and create better combos and super high jumps like capcom did. Its kinda hard to see superman only jump 4 ft in the air !!! My opioion, MK has went downhill every since they went 3-D, if they want a good game they really need to stick to 2.5-D graphics and have a two on two match goin. That would be a good start..

danwarecritic 5 pts

This will either be 8.5 material or just a cheap comic book vs. video games fighter made to cash in on both universes. Marvel Vs. Capcom was a good game but what about Capcom Vs. SNK? Now that's a crossover! We've got Rugal vs. Bison, Mai and Yuri vs. Chun li and Sakura, and Ryu, Morrigan, and Ken vs. Terry Bogard, Ryo Sakazaki, and Kyo Kusanagi. Marvel Vs. Capcom doesn't have those kind of matches. Just cheap ones like Wolverine vs. Ryu and Mega Man vs. Spider-Man and Iron Man. And what about this one? Just one-on-one bouts probably. So, that leaves us with just Scorpion vs. Batman and Liu Kang vs. Superman. At least, that's what I think is going to be all there is to the game.

Deltron_Warrior 5 pts

HONESLY I REALLY DONT CARE BOUT THE ARTICLE I MEAN EITHER THIS GAME WILL BE TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT ,IT WILL BE DIFFERENT WE CAN SAY THAT!BUT AT THE SAME TIME ITS SOUNDS WACK DONT GET ME WRONG THE PREVIEW WAS BAD ASS,BUT THEY TOOK OUT ALL THE KOOL SH!T MK HAD IN THE PREVIOUS GAMES,IF THEY WANT SUPER HEROES FIGHTING MAKE IT A SUPER VS SUPER HEREO GAME NOT BAD ASS MK FIGHTER KICKIN HE SH!T OUT OF GREENLANTERN AN FLASH

jaxallevens 5 pts

Seriously, do you guys even read the freakin article? u guys are all complaining about how superman is overpowered or how the two universes won't collide well, they cover that in the damn article, and seriously guys, it is Boon, how often does he put out a bad game? what mythologies wasn't that bad and he didn't actually put out special forces, and look at how different Deadly alliance was when it came out, i meen they killed LUI KANG! big change, everyone hated it and now they are doing the same thing. Taking these two universes and making them one will be a hit or miss thing, and since i'm not a fair weather fan of Boon and his team, i'm gonna give them the benefit of the doubt and say it will be a great game.

Deltron_Warrior 5 pts

I THINK THIS GAME WILL BE DISSAPIONTING,THIS IS GOING TO SUCK SO BAD THAT, I'M ONLY BUYING IT TO HAVE ON THE SHELF,YEA I WILL PULL IT OUT AND MESS WIT IT BUT I THINK IT BE WAY BETTER IF IT WAS MARVEL VS DC UNIVERSE,FIRST OF HOW DOES THE MK SERIES EVOLVE AROUND BRUCE WAYNE AN CLARK KENT'S WORLD IT JUST DOESNT MAKE SENSE,ITS NOT A EVERYDAY THING WERE WE SEE LU-KANG BICYCLE KICK JOKER IN THE FACE FOR LAUGHING HIS ASS OF AT ALL OF THE MK COSTUMES,PLUS THE FACT THAT IT WILL BE TEEN RATED BECAUSE THE MAKERS OF DC HAVE PROVEN THAT BATMAN AN SUPERMAN DONT HAVE BALLS BIG ENOUGH TO JUST RIP OUT SOMEONES SPINE AN WALK AWAY LIKE BAD ASS SCORPION

WitteKraai 5 pts

If they balance the gameplay properly, any crossover can be a good game, even if it's not in line with how powerful we know the characters to be. It doesn't matter if superman can be beaten by Sonya's low punches. I've never liked the way MK plays, that is until recently. My friend is into it so I put a concerted effort into learning to play UMK3, and it's actually pretty fun. I'll wait to pass judgement until I can get my hands on a copy.

kelseyjb 5 pts

All you people who are saying this game will suck get a life you havent even played it yet and who cares about it being a crossover if mk didnt do something different u will be complaning about how they just do the samething over now they try something different u dont like it if u dont like dont buy it but at least they tryin something what are u jerks doing

CapoStatus2009 5 pts

i wanna see how they pull this one off. I think MK vs. Tekken would be a good one

dexogp17 5 pts

omg this game is going to be trash!!!! i cant believe they r going to put mk and dc together, seriously this is not a go0d combination. watz so go0d about batman and superman??? they have nothing special!!!!! and watz up with rated T??? come on, this mean no blood, no fatality, no guts coming out no all the go0d stuff. One more thing they should make a game with mk vs marvel vs capcom vs street fighter... damn it would be AWESOME!!!!

person2 5 pts

Dan2002, maybe the MK world is MADE out of kryptonite! and cptobvious, think about it, is the DC universe OR the MK universe very realistic at all? i mean who can fly around and be invincible/ freeze people with their hands irl

megadisc 5 pts

what are the guys thinking ? i dont care about batman ? where is catwoman? and the boobs bouncing scene ?

demondust72 5 pts

this mortal kombat game is good but the fact of adding in dc is a little bit disapointing

thenephariouson 32 pts

MK Vs Tekken would also be a cool idea

warrioremperor 5 pts

I didn't have time to go through all the comments to see if someone suggested this, but i would have preferred to have MK vs Street Fighter, wooooooh that would be a real worlds clash.

shockster4life 5 pts

yaa i gotta agree with Dan2002sk8er, MK vs Marvel Universe would be a lot more cleaner game. Can you imagine, Barraca vs Wolverine!! id be a bloody battle to the bitter end (though i think wolverine would eventually win) the hulk vs goro, iceman vs subzero, spiderman or cyclops vs..um scorpion..na too tough how about johnny cage?? point being Marvel has a more balanced roster than DC and it would fit well with MK. and if u throw Image comics in the mix w/ Spawn...

thenephariouson 32 pts

well i was initially REALLY put off by this premise, but im simply gonna wait for a review. Being a big fan of the MK series it'll be interesting how this pans out and weather Midway remain faithfull to their fans and not bow down to the DC franchise! Will they remain faithfull to their fanbase? we'll just have to wait and see i guess.

CptObvious1031 5 pts

Superman vs Sonya/Luke Cage/Jaxx...or any human...1 punch and they'd be out. This sounds great on paper but the "reality" of physics will be so far removed from what we know of all these DCU people it will be a joke! I'll be putting my full thoughts on this in blog...look for it soon.

valcrist09 5 pts

enough about freaking SUPERMAN oh my god who freaking cares, as far as i am concered i could freaking careless if he was even in the damn game, he is the worst hero of them nothing special about being indestructible and well i dont care what anyone els thinks, just wait tell the freaking game is out or more info is on it. God stop jumping to conclusions, 1 little trailer and a 4 min interview and you guys think you already know the game. After 16 years i think boon is trying to make a change, i dont totally agree with the change but no one knows how it will be, i would like to see more real fightings physics, cuts, bruises, torns clothes, blood that oozes out like in a fight, bloody lips ect and more realistic style fatalitesor at leased better thought out not soo corny, if there is even any fatalites gosh not a M rating is pretty harsh.....

Newraven01 5 pts

I can't wait for this game it looks so cool.

kd_kash 5 pts

The trailer isnt bad. I hope they learned from EA when they did their fighting game.

Lungorthar 5 pts

@Dan2002sk8er The superman thing is addressed in the article, or the video. You can read it there or watch the video. They are trying to make sure it is natural. As for the game overall: (O.O)

Dan2002sk8er 5 pts

what's the point wouldn't Superman just pwn them all. I mean Unless Kryptonite is something readily available in the Mortal Kombat world I think that Johny Cage might get his @$$ kicked. now if they made DC vs MARVEL vs Dark Horse, now that would be a cool game. and are they serious Rated T that takes away everything that the Mortal Kombat series was famous for.

Knightmare_King 5 pts

got a point Thenepharisouson, pretty much its a wait and see moment...maybe it might be good, then again you know the old saying, "Hope for the best but expect the worst".

thenephariouson 32 pts

i suppose we'll just have to wait and see. After all, it may not be as bad as we all think its gonna be.

Knightmare_King 5 pts

I have to agree with the rest of you guys...I'm not so sure about this collaboration especially if it becomes hyped up to an extent that it turns out bad it just makes me wonder if they are trying to take some of the concept from, "marvel Vs. Capcom" and utilize it for a more darker approach which seems cool on paper and trailer but when it comes out in stone...i don't know. but I'll still be optimistic
