User Rating: 7 | Mortal Kombat Advance GBA
Let me start out by stating the obvious, on the surface MKA looks and sounds pretty good, this was my first impression. Naturally I was a bit hesitant before finally purchasing this cartridge; it was due to all the negative feed back from consumers and it being deemed one of the worst games on the GBA library by professional reviewers. The GBA had more than enough power to hold a straight UMK3 SNES port, but this is easier said than done.

Story (6/10)
The most relative feature of any fighting game, but for what it's worth I give it this rating. This is just based on UMK3.

Graphics (8/10)
A phantom shadow to what the SNES had to offer. Like everything else it has imperfections, you would think since it's crammed into a smaller screen the character roster would be nicely detailed and sharp, but with a closer look the faces are slightly pixilated. Believe it or not it will take little time to overlook this. It still looks good.

Sound Effects (7/10)
Some of the characters' grunts and groans are off or high pitched. Keep in mind it's not with all of them, I noticed this Jax and Kabal (it just sounds funny). It threw me off some of the stage music was not applied to the right level. First time MK players would probably not even notice this.

Game play (7/10)
Very difficult at first, I would only describe it as a "rhythm" you have to give it an honest shot to find it. The computer intelligence is just a cheating whore. You will have to resort to cheap tricks in order to beat the game at the higher difficulty settings. Once you get over this the game play is pretty straight forward.

Controls (7/10)
The SNES and Genesis controls are not as smooth as the arcade version; this also applies when you compare the GBA controls to the home systems. Fatalities, combos and special moves can be executed but smashing buttons will not accomplish this.

General View: This game is not nearly as bad as everyone makes it out to be, it's been demonized and condemned without given a proper trial IGN and Game spot are guilty of this as well as the consumers in general. From the beginning the expectations were just too high for such an early GBA game. Most of you probably don't remember but the MK series was truly horrible on the original game boy, I could only view this game as a treat compared to those old green pathetic MK ports. A two player link fight with a friend also adds to MKA replay value.
