Mortal Kombat brings plenty of depth and blood to the next generation.

Last Generation Mortal Kombat went 3D and many felt that was entirely the wrong way to go with certain spin offs and cross platform titles. Does this new reboot give the series some much need spark.

Story

Well it takes place with Shao Kahn finally defeating Raiden and the fighters of EarthRealm. Raiden turns back the clock somehow to show how the story unfolded. You play as different fighter through the period of MK1,2 and 3 which were released in the 90s.

Game Modes

Well there is alot of depth in this game. You have the story mode which can last up to about 4 to 6 hours of play. You also have a Ladder Mode where you battle your way to Shao Kahn the final boss and a Tag Ladder with 2 v 2 as well. Also thrown into the mix is an intresting Tower Mode which consists of certain challeneges which reward you with unlockables and mini games.

There is also something called the Krypt which you go to for unlocking concept art,new fatalities and even different costumes and you need to get Coins from certain modes by winning matches and completing objectives. There is also online but seeing as I can't comment on that at the moment because of the recent PSN problems then I will just say they are King of the Hill,Ranked Matches and so on. I don't have any idea how well this runs online.

Characters

Well you have got most of the old characters in there plus a surprise inclusion in Kratos from God of War which seems like a nice fit. All the characters seem well balanced apart from the bosses though.

Gameplay

The game is mostly played in the way old MK was in 2D and the game runs fine because of that. All the old stuff is back. Fatalaties,Babalities and even Pit Fatalaties as well but no Friendship finsihes a shame really because they were cool. A new feature that does look awesome is X Ray moves which are kinda like Ultra Combos from Street Fighter 4 and you get to use it once your bar is full and press both L2 and R2 together and deal massive damage on your opponents.

The gameplay isn't as fast flowing as say Street Fighter 4 but it does what it does best give you plenty of blood and gore. A few problems are the later bosses like Shao Kahn are insanely powerful espically with their X Ray moves that can take more than half your life off you and the story mode cut scenes can't be skipped which is a problem because if you want a break and have past a cut scene you don't want to see it again.

Presentation

It looks absouletly aaizng the cut scenes are really good and so are the arenas. Some of them are remincent of old stages like the cliff, toxic bit, train section and Goros Lair.

Lastablity

It has a good lengthy story mode which should take a few hours as well as doing all the Tower Challeneges which should take you time and when online is restored it should give you alot of hours.

Overall Opinion

Mortal Kombat has returned with a bang with excellent design, gruesome fatalities and plenty of stuff to do as well. It is without doubt one of the best fighters of this gen and if you can I say get it.

Overall Opinion 9.1
