Mortal Kombat is nothing short of excellence, and is the best fighting game of this console generation.

User Rating: 10 | Mortal Kombat PS3
Mortal Kombat was one of the most controversial games of it's time. It's digitized graphics combined with insane amounts of gore at the time, partly caused the creation of the ESRB. The game became a huge success and spawned the now widely popular franchise. However, recently things haven't been so great for the series. The previous game ditched the over top violence for a superhero license, to mixed results. However, this new game, simply titled "Mortal Kombat" not only brings back all the gore, but also the classic game-play we've all been waiting for.

Storyline:
Mortal Kombat starts off immediately after "Armageddon" where it reveals who survived this last battle: No one. On top of the Pyramid of Argus leaves only 2 warriors. Shao Kahn and Raiden. Shao Kahn made it to the top, and Raiden tries to stop him. However Shao Kahn overpowers Raiden. With Raiden about to be killed by Shao Kahn, he sends a message to the Raiden of Mortal Kombat (the original) showing him the events of the future. That is where this new one begins.

Gameplay:
The game play is classic Mortal Kombat. It's back to the 2-D plain, however things have been changed. To make the characters more unique each button controls a limb of your fighter. Special moves are still in high abundance and combos can be made from almost any combination. New to the series is the Super Meter at the bottom of the screen. Three bars are included here. Fill up one you can make your special moves more powerful. Fill up 2 you get your breakers. Fill up 3 and you can perform an incredibly powerful X-Ray attack, kinda like the R-Rated version of Street Fighter 4's Ultra Combo. Fatalities are back as well, and I'm pleased to say they're gorier than ever. Aside from the story mode, arcade, and multiplayer modes, there is also the "Challenge Tower." Here there are 300 challenges to take on. They get progessively harder and award koins which can be used to buy content in the Krypt. The Krypt was in past MK games and here it's even more disturbing as you're not only opening koffins, but you're killing people to get items. Overall though the game play is amazing, probably the best in the entire series.

Graphics:
The game runs on the Unreal Engine, and it looks fantastic. The character models and backgrounds are stunning, and the frame never dips for a second, even online. This game has no graphical flaws to speak of.

Sound:
The voice acting is good, but not the best. The rest of the sounds however are stunning! The sound design reminds me of Dead Space, it's that good. The music is also really good, kinda like remade versions of the old MK tunes.

Overall:
Mortal Kombat is an amazing game, the best game released so far this year. If you're an MK fan, you likely already own this. If you're a fighting game fan, you owe it yourself to play this. If you like video games in general you need this. Mortal Kombat is nothing short of excellence, and is the best fighting game of this console generation.
