wow 8.5 gamespot really?
I can tell you without a shadow of doubt , this game was made with the fans of the series in mind, well thats how I feel.
Now for starters I probably know what you are thinking, "2D gameplay?" outdated? well yes, a bad thing? not at all. if you think the gameplay has been dumbed down, I would say "no way" even though it is a 2D platform the game is not without its depth, it demands strategy, careful timing, and awesome reflexes to get the most out of your characters.
but what I am really impressed about is how most characters (a handful there Im yet to play with) feels so powerful and competent, in previous MK tittles several fighters were in serious disadvantage when compared to the titular more popular characters, thats not the case here, each character along with their moves and special attacks have been carefully crafted so you dont feel like a fool for using the random character selection feature.
what else can I say? fatalities are back, and you will approve the serious makeover they are given. the environments are so awesome ...maybe too awesome if not distracting at times, but I forgive NetherRealms for that because their heart was in the right place. Im not a fan of the krypt feature or the necropolis thing, but nothing gamebreaking there.
I can also assure you, you will enjoy the story mode, quite exciting and very interesting, it may not be the best story ever written but once you start, you may not be able to stop till you see it through to its end.
this is without a doubt one of the best made MK games in years, if you enjoy the MK series, you will enjoy this one especially because it goes back to its roots, it tries to grasp that which made the first ones so great and it succeeds at it. I absolutely recommend this game to any MK fan and even newcomers.
now the bad...what? you thought I was some fanboy?
first , I pre-ordered the game through gamestop, the classic MK look for Scorpion isnt bad, but I would've expected more, I always do for paying the "new game" price (59$ plus taxes). loving the game so no regrets, but publishers shouldnt capitalize on that.
it is rather annoying having to go to the necropolis after unlocking a alternative costume via the Krypt.
when the 3 power bars are nearly full it is hard to tell whether you are ready or not to perform the x-ray move, yeah sure there is a message that appears for a couple of second and then its gone, it would be better if the power bar started to flash or changed color or something because most of the time I have to find out the hard way and those are a couple of seconds that may/will lose me the match.
I have had like 2-3 online matches only, most of the time it says it failed to connect to the servers, my connection isnt the best out there nor is the service, but I have no problem with other games only MK is giving me that, sure that will be fixed eventually.
some combos require you to "press rapidly" not hard if you are the freaking road runner.
not exactly a negative aspect "yet", NetherRealm is planning to release more characters for download, eventually. it will bother me If I have to pay extra for them.
