You'd better think twice before turning into a monster hunter... like every job it has it's ups and downs

User Rating: 5.2 | Monster Hunter PS2
Monster Hunter's a fantasy based adventure game, that consists mostly in hunting monsters and items, and creating items and equipments from some of those. And if you want to, you can go on an online hunting with some friends too. But, is it worth your trouble? It sure sounds nice but it isn't as good as it sounds...

The game's story is about you, a hunter from a village (or a town in online mode), in a pre-historical like world, where most of it seems based on the dinosaur age. Basically your everyday job is gathering a some items requested by the village/town chief, and... and... that's it!

When you start the game, you can pick a handfull of different skins, faces and hairstyles for your character, but that doesn't matter at all, since later on you'll be covered by layers and layers of armor, you'll probably even forget what you look like. The missions given to you are all timed, even though the time is more then enough to accomplish them, you'll feel stuck to your task,
since you can't wander around the world to see some monsters unless it's part of the mission. The missions are very repetitive, and you'll fight the same monsters, and walk through the same path over, and over, and over... even though you have some variety of weapons to chose from,
you'll most likely get bored with them all, because the gameplay just feels slow, everything is slow, the monster will most likely run away/counter attack during your combo and you'll feel frustrated because there was nothing you could have done, defending and dodging aren't responsive either. You attack using the right analog stick, each direction is a different attack, which gives you about 4 attacks per weapon.

The graphics aren't great either, you can walk through big monsters' corpses like if one of you were a ghost, and nothing will get your attention, even in a pre-historical/fantasy world, nothing will be new to you, or specially good looking.

The sound is poor too, you hear some of the classic nature sounds like water flowing, bugs, birds, and the rest is monster noises, hitting sounds, and some really boring songs that don't help bringing the action. When creating your character you also can pick his/her voice... but it consists
of moaning, so it isn't really worth the trouble, since they all sound the same.

Monster Hunter had a good potential, but it was poorly made, everything seems half finished, and you most likely get bored before finishing the game. If you have some friends to play with you on online mode, things will be better but still, there are much better games of this kind around. You may want to leave this one alone, but if you want to tr it, rent it first.
