Monster Bass Fishing is just another fishing game. It doesn't introduce any new features and will leave you bored.

Everyone loves fishing right? Sure but not when it's on the Game boy and involves the word Monster. Monster Bass Fishing is a good game with a good mechanic at its core, but a few major problems will leave you feeling uninterested and bored.

The gameplay is simple. You can either play tournaments or free fishing. In free fishing you choose a lake to go to and navigate your boat (which is pretty fun) to find a good spot to fish in. Occasionally your boat will get stuck or have a hard time being controlled. When you find a good spot you charge up your cast and throw your line. Then you'll be taken to a screen with a picture of some fish swimming in the water and your bait. Mentioning bait, you can customize what kind you use. From fake crawdads to sinkers, all the typical fishing gear is here. While underwater you have to reel your rod in and hope for a bite. There's not much mobility and it can leave you feeling a lack of control. Once you get a bite you have to reel it in a certain way or the line breaks. This can get annoying because even barely to much button mashing can have you breaking lines and loosing bait. As you can see, it gets pretty repetitive. After catching a fish you'll be taken to a weigh in screen showing what fish you caught and how heavy it is. You can then choose whether or not to put it in your aquarium. Sadly, there is no save feature so you lose whatever fish you catch here.

Tournament mode is just like free fish, only you are at a certain lake and have to catch certain kinds of fish. If you win (which is unlikely) you get a trophy and a password to continue. Thats right, passwords. The archenemy of gamers everywhere. Unless you can write down the password you are doomed to an eternity of playing the first tournament.

This game is actually pretty addictive despite the many cons. The graphics are entertaining for the game boy, the music is very inviting, and challenging yourself to catch the biggest monster bass out there is pretty fun. However repetitive gameplay, passwords, and a lack of a save function pretty much ruin it. Overall a 6.5 out of 10.
