Crashy Crashy

Here are some notes for any prospective buyers who might want to play Monopoly on their DSes and who are fortunate enough to get a chance to try this before they buy it.

- Try tapping the money value with the stylus when it's not your turn.

- Get into an auction when nobody has enough money for the starting bid.

Both of these things will force a restart; the first with a crash, and the second with an eternal auction you can't get out of. I only played Monopoly five times in order to discover these things (the first one multiple times), which makes me wonder how many martinis the playtesting team had with their lunches each day. I'm just lucky this is a borrowed copy.

The graphics on this are amazing for a board game collection, but it's clear the folks at Sensory Sweep were more concerned with looks than gameplay. Aside from the aforementioned freezes, the control is simply idiotic. There seems to be no way to play this only with the buttons or only with the touch screen; you are forced to use both. And touch screen sensitivity is TERRIBLE. You'll find playing any of the four games that often it'll register a click on something an inch away from what you actually clicked on. What the heck is that?

Additionally, there are needlessly long wait times involved with the CPU players in Monopoly. You can make their pieces move faster by pressing A, but you can't cancel the 5-second wait time after their turns end. For a game that's already slow-paced, this is unforgivable.

So in conclusion, I can't recommend this to anyone. I won't go so far as to say it's not worth $1; if you see it for that price, go ahead and buy it. But $5 is too much, to say nothing of the actual $20 MSRP or the current $50 Marketplace price on Amazon.

It's a pity, because if they'd actually paid a handful of tournament Monopoly/Boggle/etc. players to play it 8 hours a day for a week and critique the gameplay, we might actually have one of the best Monopoly games on any platform. As it stands, this is pretty much junk. Down with lazy developers!
