Wright: Spore still coming next spring

Iconic game designer tells BBC Radio that the oft-delayed game still requires months of tweaking before its release in Q2 2008.

At the Leipzig Games Convention in August, the public got its hands on a playable version of Spore, the species-evolving/civilization-growing/space-faring game from game designer Will Wright. The appearance of the game came two and a half years after the game was first unveiled, and two and a half months after it was delayed yet again.

Spore's postponement marked the second time the game, originally due out in 2006, had been pushed back. According to Wright, though, the PC edition will still land in the rough Q2 2008 target window set by Electronic Arts executives during a post-earning-report conference call. (A scaled-down edition for the Nintendo DS has also been announced, though it currently does not have a release date.)

Saying Spore will be "roughly available in six months' time" on BBC Radio Five Live yesterday, Wright went on to explain the reasons behind the holdup. He said the game was undergoing "extensive testing" to ensure that it had the same broad appeal as one of his previous creations. "I'd like the people who played The Sims to be able to play Spore," he said. "I don't want it to be just [for] hardcore gamers."

Ah dang the last thing Will Wright said is freaking me out. I hope he dosen't make a huge mistake. I also wouldn't be surprised if the game got delayed again.

There actually is combat and strategy in the game. Do you homework before making blanket statements dude.

My god, stereotype much? I don't mind The Sims but I enjoy a full shooter like Gears of War just as much. Incorrect lines like that are what give male gamers a bad name.

Don't make it likeable to the sims audience, start a new sort of game type and not the Sims please WW. Do not let this game crash because of them. I was liking what I see, now its just trying to attract a bigger female audience. Why did WW have a daughter...

yep, they are going to make it to cater for many peoples intrests, even if they dont have a 8800 setup and are about to upgrade yet again just to play crysis. its a wonder why they didnt intend for people who play sims to like spore in the first place .[/sarcasm]

The last phrase worries me a bit: Will Wright wants Spore to appeal to Sims players. Now let's think that through. Sims was hugely popular with the female audience, for a couple of reasons: there's no combat or strategy in the game, you get to customize little people's looks, decorate their houses and basically meddle with their lives. The only thing Spore has in common with these concepts ( as far as I know), is the customizable creature creation process. Later on, it becomes a game of developing, exploring, building, conquering, destroying. Good luck warming the Sims audience to that sort of gameplay. I just hope Will knows what he's doing, and the Spore gameplay won't end up falling between two chairs (if that's even an expression in English).
