A nice, fast-paced Gundam game.

Encounters in Space is sort of like Gundam's first foray into Zone of the Enders-style gameplay, which is quick and energetic. Encounters is Space's strength is simply the amount of content to burn through; it not only gives you the classic tale of White Base's exploits during the Universal Century's One Year War (in both TV series and Movie versions, to boot), but also the addition tale of the Thoroughbred, which is also featured in the manga "Place Beyond the Blaze", as well as a mix and match of various ace pilots of the Earth Federation and Principality of Zeon (mostly from Zeon). Not to mention the Mission mode, which allows you to create your own pilot and run through a batch of eight missions of your choice before letting you save you character for use in the game's somewhat disappointing multiplayer, which is still enjoyable if you're patient enough. On top of all the characters to play as and unlock, the game has a near unrivalled amount of mobile suits, mobile armor, and various other space craft to unlock for use in Mission mode and Versus mode. Gameplay's rather simplistic: you fly around, kill a bunch of stuff, and get a score. Almost every playable unit has a primary weapon, secondary weapon, melee attack, and special attack, though usually you'll just boost around shooting your opponent until you get close enough to stab him with you saber or whatever, though close combat can be pretty clunky at times. A welcome feature that I rather though odd which was missing from Federation vs. Zeon is the ability to dictate your attitude in space (in case I got my terminology mixed up, I mean the ability to look up and down and move in a vertical motion); this really helps if you're surrounded by enemies or one goes past you. All in all, it doesn't quite give you the high-speed mecha combat feeling that ZoE gave you back in 2001, but it still gives you an enjoyable Gundam experience and a buttload of crap to unlock.
