Despite Sonic's role being pushed to the side throughout the game, it is an interesting game nonetheless.

Sonic Adventure 2: Battle is a updated port of Sonic Adventure 2, with many changes. The graphics are redone to fit with the GameCube's software specifications, new unlockable goodies (themes, costumes and other related things), a better 2-player mode (hence the "Battle" within the title), better Chao raising mode and of course, a special treat for those who like finishing what they started (Hint: This game was originally made to celebrate Sonic's 10th birthday).
The game is mostly about the discovery of a weapon left by the late Gerald Robotnik (Dr. Eggman grandfather), the introduction of Shadow and Rouge, GUN's first time being involved with Sonic and his friends and the truth about what happened 50 years ago.
The gameplay of this game varies in many ways from Sonic Adventure. First off, you cannot choose individual characters. You have to choose sides, either Hero or Dark. Both are available at the beginning. Each level will involve a different character.
The Hero side consists of Sonic (classic running stages), Tails (shoot-em-up stages) and Knuckles (treasure hunting stages). The story starts off with Sonic being mistaken for Shadow and being pursued by GUN. Sonic first encounters Shadow after a fight with one of GUN's robots and dismisses Shadow as a fake and a copycat. Elsewhere, Knuckles intentionally breaks the Master Emerald after an encounter with Rouge. After a showdown with Eggman, Tails arrives and joins forces with Sonic and Knuckles. Throughout the Hero story, STK try to figure out what Dr. Eggman is up to and learn more about Shadow.
The Dark side consists of Shadow (classic running stages), Dr. Eggman (shoot-em-up stages) and Rouge (treasure hunting stages). The story starts off with Dr. Eggman searching for an abandoned military weapon that his grandfather created. However, his plans of world domination are temporarily put on the backburner when he unleashes Shadow (who claims to be the ultimate life-form). Elsewhere, Rouge makes her first appearance and claims that all the world's gems are for her and her alone, with her eyes set on the Master Emerald. Throughout the Dark story, Eggman teams up with Shadow and Rouge in his quest for world domination, albeit his plans will have interference.
The other difference is the absence of "Adventure" fields. I guess it help gives a more linear feel to the storyline.
The 2-player battle mode allows for better gameplay and more options. You can also play as certain characters that were originally NPCs. At certain points, if you collect enough rings, you can unleash an attack, which becomes increasingly stronger.
The Chao raising system is back and it's much more complex. There are endless ways to raise your Chao into an ultimate athlete. There are endless lists of websites devoted to raising Chao, so don't hesitate to look.
Upgrades are in every level for each character, but the one upgrade all six character use is the Magical Melody, which will come in handy for those who want to finish the game. However, you may need certain upgrades before you can obtain all of them.
To sum it up, Sonic Adventure 2: Battle will offer even the simplest of gamers endless hours of fun and entertainment without coming off as too strategic (and I mean simple in their ways, not mentally). If you still have your GameCube, pick up a copy of this game online and play it the way it was meant to be. If you want to use your Action Replay, you can do so! There are endless cheats for this game, many of them may help you along in your quest to finish what you started or finish 1st in the Chao races.
What are you waiting for? Give it a try! It's THAT good!
