Minecraft went gold last Friday; Danny O'Dwyer and Seb Ford take a look at what's new!
No we have heard it plenty of times b4 but of course gameplay is more important than graphics and minecraft is a prime example of this. BUT, these days and its becoming more apparent, graphics are getting to the stage were they are becoming much more crucial for the players experience and the whole "graphics arent important" thing is slowly becoming not quite as true as it once was. I mean take survival horror for example which benefit from some great atmospheric graphics. It does affect gameplay in that way cause it really helps the player get into the game. Just my 2 cents. Oh and i have heaps of fun with minecraft.
in the beginning the water is dark and light because the dark side is near the dark swampy grass, which results in dark swampy water
@Toysoldier34 Then you're missing a point. It was an example. Graphics wise, compared to Minecraft, obviously COD looks better and more graphically realistic. What I was saying, is that good gameplay doesn't need amazing graphics. Many kids won't look at a game twice these days unless it looks graphically pleasing. In 10 years time, maybe then, people will finally realise COD is boring. I learnt that a long time ago. With Minecraft's 16x16 res graphics, I am more than happy spending a hell of a lot of time on that. Oh, an TF2, oh an Skryim... oh and BF3. :) MINECRAFT POWAR!
I wish i wasn't brainwashed to love games that look good. This game isn't pretty, but it looks like gives room for a lot of creativity. Skyrim and Assassin's creed has made me come to dislike old school games, but surprise! I LOVED "To The Moon". Since this game has no story, it may not be for everyone.
@Lasertoffe If advertisements bug you that much just get Ad Blocker Plus. I know it's available on Firefox...not sure about other browsers.
The water and grass differences are from the different Biomes. It is where places like grassland, marshes, snowy areas meet.
You guys need to regenerate your server, the terrain generators have been changed dramatically over previous versions, including what happens in the Nether, Nether structures are actually everywhere. Fortresses are also unlimited in the real world now. The color scheme of biomes is what causes darker water which looks terrible in most texture packs due to shading issues. The ender is assesible by portals found in fortresses, activated by using ender pearls. Levels are used for enchanting.
@dannyodwyer I Did that a while ago, still got no message back (Unless I'm signing up wrong, but I'm following the instructuions of Fear the Creeper) I understand though that your trying to let people in slowly so it doesnt flood though :)
I would hate to be a Games Journalist. Having to pretend to like this utterly tedious game must really suck.
Gamespot, you really need to bring to the fore, the fact that Minecraft crashes constantly for so many players. Even after allocating more RAM to Java and creating a .bat file to start Minecraft with more RAM, it's STILL crashing after just a couple of minutes. There are numerous ways to fix this online, and I've tried all of them, but nothing works. Re-installing Java and Minecraft doesn't work either. I really want to play this, but I'm blue in the face trying to fix it. Someone please help.

@Lokey7 Outdated? what other game do you know that creates a unique random world that is pretty much infinitely large? With this amount of crafting & building? The graphics style does not mean it is outdated.
@Lokey7 Another "awww i wantz amazin graphicz coz that's what makezzz gameplay goood!"... no it doesn't. Go play COD.
I kinda of like the hunger bar but it's annoying because now I have to make food a priority and sometimes I can't find animals to get food from. So I just kill zombies and eat rotten flesh that way I don't starve to death well until I find animals and grow wheat.
Minecraft is like food you've never eaten: it might not look appealing but it tastes delicious once you try it. xD
you guys are so irritating. The fact that your playing this and you have no clue what the nether is happening.
@shanethewolf It's... hard to explain. You really have to play it. For at least... 3 hours, then you will get it...
Please can someone tell me what's so appealing about this game as I'm not getting the hype. Aside from looking so obviously ugly and dated, it looks tedious to play.
I'm pretty sure the water's color changes with the biomes. The water you were looking at was in a swamp biomes so it was darker.
OK, so Enchanting: It only works on tools, swords, and armor. You spend experience levels on enchantments, and bookshelves placed nearby the enchanting table will make the enchantments available more potent (though they will also cost more experience levels). Blaze Rods are used to make a brewing stand, so you can brew potions. The animals must be fed WHEAT to breed them, not bones. hehe. :P The Eyes of Ender will guide you to the strongholds, but you'll also need them to activate the portal to The End. Eyes of Ender are crafted by adding Blaze Powder to an Ender Pearl.
