Seriously, will Notch fix this?

Unless he somehow rewrites the whole java virtual machine, I doubt he can do much.

Not Java, bad optimization. It's up to Notch to figure out what cycles are unnecessary, which ones don't need to occur as frequently, and how to better handle the execution of the code overall. Is it easy? When you've already written a huge program, no it isn't. Is it possible? Sure. Will it happen? Not until content updates slow down, and he focuses on nothing but optimization. Not bug fixes, or content. Only optimization. And even then, it could take a while.

You can change the fps in the video options. Just change the default to whatever works faster for you.

And interpreted language, like Java, is almost always slower than a compiled language, such as C++.
This is why a lot of 3D games are written in C++, and almost none are written in Java.

Ummmmm...... That's not how it works. It is an FPS cap, caps your FPS at whatever it is set at. Even then, some claim that limiting your FPS will increase the amount of other stuff going on, increasing the CPU usage.

I place $20 into a box. So do you. There is now $40 in the box. I sell the box to you for $30. We both walk away with a $10 profit.

I have a hard time understanding why Runescape can split the load across cores more efficiently than Minecraft when they're both written in the same language. Maybe someone more computer savvy can explain it?
It shouldn't kill my laptop to stand next to running water in Minecraft.

It's how the code is written, contrary to what everyone on this board will tell you about Java. Yes, at its very root, Java is a slower language, but that difference is practically negligible with today's computers. The problem is not with Java, the problem will not go away if Notch re-does Minecraft in C++/Python/Ruby/Pascal/HTML/whatever other language people will come up with. The problem will go away when Notch sits down and works 100% on optimizations. Not bug fixes, not features.
The reality is, if the game isn't optimized this late into development, optimizing will be a huge pain in the ass for him, just because the programming has become so complex. And, it's not a day job, a week job, or I'd even wager a month job. I'm willing to be that if he were to really get down on making the game run smoothly, he actually may wind up reading Java textbooks. This is really something that should have been taken care of early on, and maintained at a reasonable level as development continued. There's no going back in time, and to be honest, you can't blame the guy. He didn't intend for the game to boom like this. It was a toy he had fun building. If he had the intention of selling like crazy, I guarantee you the game would run much better.
