Might and Magic VII: For Blood and Honor User Review

- "Amazing"
Might and magic games are an old-school breed of first person view RPGs. In my humble opinion the seventh instalment is the best in the series
Graphics 7/10
The graphics are probably the worse part of the game. Even way back when it was released the engine was clearly dated. As is apparent from the screenshots, the gameworld was pretty pixelated, especially the monster textures which were only 2D sprites. These still had atleast some substance, so you couldn't get swarmed by 50 of them standing on the same tile at least. The only good thing that stands out about the graphics are the animations you get when entering shops, houses and dungeons. Each dungeon has a 3D animated sequence which all look very atmospheric and get you in the right mood before exploring dungeons.
Sounds 9/10
The sound effects are normal, indeed many were taken from the previous instalment, yet that does not have to be a bad thing. Indeed many of these sounds, like doors opening, trapdoors falling, etc., sound so "right" that I've been hearing them in many games and even films over the last decade. The great thing about the sound are the music tracks, they are very orchestral, unique and generally sound quite good and moody.
Story 10/10
Truth be told, while most of the other instalments of the series lack a real intriguing story, the seventh part is an exception. You won't entirely understand the beginning cinematic, in truth you will probably get the feeling the intro cinematic doesn't relate to the story at all until most probably the very end, where everything ties in very well in a fitting and interresting ending cinematic. The story definitely feels original if you can get fully into it (not spoiling anything, but about half-way through the game, where you get to choose the light or dark path).
Gameplay 9/10
The gameplay is fluid, fun, real-time or turn-based, you choose. Some enemies can be more swiftly dispatched in real-time mode, some require planning and strategy of a turn-based combat system. Still some segments of combat might feel unpolished. Sometimes, while you are still pretty weak, you spent most of the time in dungeons running backwards shooting arrows at the opponents, who are overhelmingly strong. But as soon you learn some nice spells, get good equipment (pretty early if you know where to look), from then on, it's fun all the way till the end.
Replayability 10/10
The gaming world is wast, there are many classes to choose from, the party can have different composition which in turn influences the way it is played, there are several races to choose from and ultimate there is a light or dark path which feature different quest and promotions for your characters as well as a different ending, which both are quite satisfying. Needless to say, the game has a high replay value, especially for a second playthrough. From the third playthrough on, the value decreases.
All in all, eventhough, from the grades I have given the game, the game should be between 9-9,5, still, it being one of my all-time favorites I cannot rate it less than a perfect 10. That is because although some things, like graphics, are less than ideal, still together with other things they form a perfect pack which is more than great. The saying "the whole is more than the sum of its parts" applies here 100 percent.

- This is a manuscript from MM9 describing such an event that happened and also tries to pin point a location I couldn't quite find, but I so wish to find. Maybe there is something more here which I haven't found yet.Posted May 3, 2007
