This is where the train-sim genre really started and continues to live to this day.

User Rating: 9.5 | Microsoft Train Simulator PC
The year was 2001, the day was the 20th of june. This was when kuju and microsoft released the first proper railway simulator for PC. This was the game that inspired auran to make their own railway simulator, Trainz. Anyway, before I get carried away, we're supposed to be talking about how great this game is.

For 2001 the graphics were very good, despite the fact it was really just a simulator that allowed you to familiarise yourself with the controls of a railway engine. You can have plenty of fun driving a train in just about anywhere from the countryside of north west england to the mountains of europe to the forests of montana to the high-tech metropolis of Tokyo. You can do fun missions in every one of the routes.

Each engine is rendered beautifully and there a quite a few to choose from. There is the Flying scotsman, Valiant, Dash9, Series 7000 LSE, Acela express and more. What's more, there are thousands of trains available to download off of the internet, and the great thing about this game, is that it doesn't go out of date. People are still making routes and trains available to download off of UKTrainsim, even though there is also trainz, Rail Simulator and Railworks, which are also the subject of downloadable content.

Overall, MSTS is the true pioneer in train-sims and is definitely worth getting if you don't have it. it's quite an old game so you can get it for about a tenner if not cheaper in various game shops and supermarkets.
