Who has a mediocre game, that's too short and in 2D? M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E!

User Rating: 4.5 | Mickey's Wild Adventure PS
Mickey's Wild Adventure is a 2D platformer which lets you control Mickey Mouse through several worlds based on some of his classic cartoons. Sound familiar? That's because this is a port of Mickey Mania on the SNES, Megadrive and Mega-CD. That said, it's not completely the same as the other versions; as well as the different name, various other small changes have been made to the game.

The graphics already looked great on the SNES and Genesis and even better on the Mega CD but the Playstation version is definitely the best looking of them all. Mickey himself is well animated and there are lots of cool effects like the switch from black and white to colour in the Steamboat Willie stage. While a 2D game on the Playstation would usually look dated, the graphics in Mickey's Wild Adventure still hold up well for the most part because they capture the look and feel of an old Mickey Mouse cartoon perfectly. The chase part of the Moose Hunters level looks much better than even the Mega-CD version, but it still does look a bit old compared to the chase levels from Crash Bandicoot. The music also helps create the cartoony atmosphere. It is mostly the same as the Mega-CD version but it still sounds excellent, fitting well with the level themes while still being incredibly catchy. Lots of voice clips are used for Mickey and while you'll hear the "Ow"s and "Uh-oh"s more than anything else it is a neat feature to have Mickey's voice following the events onscreen.

While the graphics and the audio capture the essence of a Mickey Mouse cartoon perfectly, the rest of the game is a complete wreck. Watching cartoons is fun – playing this game on the other hand, is not. The levels are well designed in terms of staying true to the actual source material, but they're really not all that interesting. All Mickey can do is run, jump and throw marbles. Yes, throw marbles. It's refreshing to see an anthropomorphic character in a video game who doesn't reek of fake attitude, but the game should really have been called "Mickey's Mild Adventure." Occasionally, you might get to do something interesting like escape from a moose, but for the most part the platforming is very straightforward and dull.

Everything feels like it was poorly designed. Skeletons explode when you touch them, making them near impossible to get past. Sometimes you'll fall through a platform which you clearly landed square on. Mickey's issues don't completely ruin the experience, but they really detract from the enjoyment and ramp up the difficulty considerably. This game is really tough, although it's not that hard to get through because it's incredibly short. The whole game can be knocked over in under an hour which is a good thing considering there's no save feature at all. For a game released in the late 90s, this is simply inexcusable – there's not even any password system.

If you're a fan of Mickey Mouse cartoons and sub-par platforming, chances are you already own Mickey's game on one of the three other consoles. Considering the only difference between this version and the Mega-CD one is slightly sharper graphics and a whole 2 minute long level, there really is no point in upgrading. Just go and actually watch a Mickey Mouse cartoon and relive the classics the way they were meant to be.
