A Fallout game, on rail.

User Rating: 8 | Metro 2033 PC
Metro 2033 is a FPS, set in a post-apocalyptical world. It is based on a 2005 novel of the same name, written by Dmitry Glukhovsky.

The atmosphere is everything in that game. You have to put your oxygen mask to be able to breath when you are in radiated areas. You have a certain quantity of cartridges for it, so you have to hurry up sometimes, or scavenge some from the dead bodies. You will fight against mercenaries as well as against few types of beasts that were probably radiated.

I would say that the difficulty level is quite high. I played it at hard, and there are few places where I needed to try and retry in order to get passed them. When the enemies shoot you, your health decrease incredibly fast. You cannot afford to take several hits.

In this game, the money is in fact the military ammo. There are 2 types of ammo. The regular, which was built after the nuclear incident, and the military which were build before. These ones are stronger and are in demand in each city. So, you can use them in your gun, or keep them to buy some guns, upgrades, health kits, etc...

The story is a bit weak. You need to deliver a message to another metro station during the first half of the game, which was a bit too long for what happened in my opinion. The second half is where all happens. A lot of actions, and a better understanding of the story itself. There are 2 endings to the game, but they do not differ much from the other. I do not recommend to play twice only for that. So, expect to do only 1 walkthrough. There is no multiplayer mode to this game, so if you find it somewhere cheap, buy it. If not, you can rent it and probably go through it in one week-end.

The graphics sure look dated in Metro. Controls are a bit clumsy. You cannot go to cover with a button press. You can only get cover behind the objects by standing or crouching behind them, which make me feel like I was playing a 90's game. I did not encounter many bugs, only few dead bodies that were bugging. Nothing major. You can see your objectives by bringing on the screen a pad and use your lighter to see them if you are in the dark. You also have a timer on your wrist to indicate how much time you have left in your air cartridges. The sound is great, all along the game. You can hear when your character needs a mask as he starts coughing.

Globally, a well done game that did not have all of the shining that it deserved.
