Written and directed by Hideo Kojima, Metal Gear is the first in the "Metal Gear Solid" franchise. To many player and fans of the series, Metal Gear Solid for the PlayStation 1 was considered the first, but that does not change the fact the Metal Gear is the first in the franchise, which was released on the MSX2 home computer in Japan on July 12, 1987. While the MSX2 version of the game was never released in the U.S. and Europe, Metal Gear was released on the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) in June 1988, which turned out poorly translated and created from the original Metal Gear on the MSX2.

The story revolves around Solid Snake (before he became a hero… and a legend). A rookie member of the special forces group FOXHOUND sent on his first mission. He is assisted via radio by his commanding officer Big Boss, who offers information about mission objectives. Among the prisoners Snake rescues includes Grey Fox (Who is in the MSX2 version), a FOXHOUND agent who was captured during a previous mission. Sometime near the end of the 20th century 200km north of Galzburg, South Africa, lies Outer Heaven, a fortified state founded by a "legendary mercenary" that is unknown until the end of the game. Deep within the Outer Heaven stronghold, a weapon of mass destruction is being constructed. Grey Fox, FOXHOUNDS top Special Forces agents is sent in to infiltrate the fortress, assess the situation and neutralize the threat. Days later, contact with Gray Fox is lost and his last transmission simply reads "METAL GEAR..." FOXHOUNDS newest recruit, Solid Snake, is ordered by squad leader Big Boss to rescue Gray Fox and carry out his mission. Snake manages to find Grey Fox, and through his he learns that "Metal Gear" is the codename of a nuclear warhead-equipped bipedal walking tank, which can engage and dominate in all forms of combat as well as launch its nuclear warheads from any location. Snake must find and stop the Outer Heaven leader, in order to save the world from a nuclear devastation. As snake makes his way through Outer Haven, he is confronted by the mercenary leader of Outer Heaven, who turns out to be Big Boss, his commanding officer. Big Boss used Snake as a pawn in his game, but had quite underestimated Snake's capabilities. Snake manages to destroy Metal Gear but became injured in the process. Big Boss starts a self-destruct sequence for the compound, and both of them has a final one on one go before the end ("Have at you Snake?). Snake manages to defeats Big Boss and escapes the Outer Heaven compound as it crumbles in flames behind him.
A message from Big Boss is displayed after the credits saying that he will meet Solid Snake again.

Metal Gear is a fun game for its time that introduced player to hiding from your enemies instead of blowing everything up, which paid the way to the stealth genre.
