Peter Brown enters blade mode in order to bring you this review for Metal Gear Rising: Revengance.
I like it :D it´s fun to play. I only don´t like Raidens attitude but that might change. The gameplay is pretty good. You can destroy almost everything that is in the game. There is still sneaking stuff, so it´s still metal gear, you can clearly feel that when you play the game. Many typical meta gear aspects are there, just the game is kind of fast, the scenery is amazing, the fighting system is really well done but all about timing and practise. All in all you can clearly feel that this game was directed by Hideo Kojima and his team.
The "4 hours" that it takes to beat this game has more content and enjoyment and excitement than I would ever experience spending 100 hours READING an RPG. Its like a Call of Duty single player campaign... Lots of quality content in tight package(don't flame me bro). I describe these types of games as "Better than any action movie I've ever seen" to my friends that haven't played them yet.
This game is great. I will look forward to playing ANY Metal Gear Solid OR Metal Gear Rising game released in the future.
Putting the "Metal Gear" name on this crack-addled bit of nonsense is like naming a new soccer game after Starcraft.
what really pisses me off about the review of this game is the nonchalant attitude of the reviewers.okay the game has great game play and good graphic but it lack in certain aspects one being its story.all we hear is "the game maybe short but its fun","it has poor story but it fun".a fun gameplay is good but some gamer are more story driven than other.IGN for instance says that GOW ascension story lack motivation to keep you playing but when they reviewed REVENGENCE it was all"its good fun"and nothing else matters..
I'm not sure what shocks me more: that this review wasn't done by Kevin Vanord like every other review lately or that the chick on the cover of this game is actually a dude.
Very impressive for a first installment. Environments are a little flat but the gameplay makes up for it. A wonderful experience :)
luv the game , but it felt a little short lived . as soon as i began to enjoy the game it was over. which is a shame since the gameplay and graphics r so enjoyable ....
This game has some genuinely cool parts. The boss fight with Sam stands out as one of the best in the whole game to me.
I just beat it last night with a play time of 6 hours and 22 minutes on Normal. That was me playing like I do any other game. I think a lot of folks are exaggerating saying they beat it in under 4 hours. I took the time to explore and get all the collectibles I could find without a guide and all the item chests.
Overall, this is a great action game. Honestly, the story was sh!t, but that was not a big concern for me anyway. It is not PlatinumGames best, but it's still a very good game. Bayonetta is still their best work, IMO. Great review. I'd score it a solid 8.0 too.
Another game that, in my eyes, fails for being too japanese. That eccentricism is so over-the-top, it stopped being funny a decade ago. Hell, it's not that it's just eccentricism. That bad guy at the end of the video, take a good look at him... long ass fingernails on an android hand which is supposed to be made for combat, go figure what the hell the nails are for. Maybe for scratching a Metal Gear's back when it's plowing him. After the nails, you notice the posing. What IS that?... he proceeds to lash out and apparently cut a hundred slices with 2 slashes, all just for showing off I presume. If he actually hit them too, at that distance, then it's just even more absurd than otherwise. See, it's not only eccentric, it's stupid, juvenile.
Like most folks, I was hyped when I saw that early cinematic trailer. Mostly solely because of this new feature of cutting crap up, admittedly. It really looked fun. But, as with any "feature toy" in a game, it can't hold up a game and make it good on its own. Not unless it's a simpler indie game. And apparently, this game only has that toy. And even then, the problem with environmental destruction is that it's bound to be far from universal. You have an all-powerful post-modern katana, you can slice up advanced metal robots as well as meaty foes, along with some other miscellanea. But then, you can't carve up a random brick wall. Development-wise, it makes sense, but it surely destroys immersion altogether. If ever a game so over-the-top and whimsical immerses you, to begin with.
To be fair, I'm not saying any final word on this game, as to my opinion. Just that, from all I see in this review (and not so much what he's saying), the game just looks like a gratuitous action romp with this new toy of cutting up crap how much we like. And at that level, I certainly disagree with the 8.5 score.
In my 2 cents, even though I'm no fan of Metal Gear Solid, I'd have rather it remained Metal Gear Solid and not "Rising". Absurd and all that jazz as the story still was, at least it didn't have so much action-inspired absurdity, reminiscent of what you see in action anime for kids, all the posing and posturing. To be fair, if you're a younger gamer, you're bound to appreciate this more. And that's natural, if not so much ideal.
@pitosga
I'm an older gamer and i find this is the best hack&sly since bayonetta. If you can't look past the over the top presentation it's your loss because this is a really fun and challenging game with tight controlls and excellent fighting mechanics.
Maybe you should play a game first before you condemn it, otherwise you might come off as an ignorant prick.
Re-read the second last paragraph, if you ever read it the first time.
Perhaps you should resist calling insulting names, even if indirectly, when pretending to mount the high horse.
@pitosga
Have you played it yet?
Here's a summary of your first post:
" To be fair, I'm not saying any final word on this game, but after watching the video and ignoring what the reviewer has to say, i think it looks like shit aimed at little kids."
Sounds pretty ignorant to me.
Good hack&slay games like Devil may cry, Ninja Gaiden, Bayonetta AND MGR are about over the top action only at first view.
Actually it's about fast thinking, good reflexes, muscle memory, anticipation, learning the enemy attack patterns and reacting accordingly in the right way at the right moment.
Games like this have much in common with beat 'em ups, schmups and even puzzle games. Video games in it's purest form.
Btw: A ignorant person might say: "Half Life is only for kids, 'cause all you do is running around shooting things." But of course it's not and MGR is certainly not a gratuitous action romp.
Too short game! Finished in 03:50 time played. Awesome game, love it! But I wish it had a much longer storyline.
teenager version of ninja gaiden.
P.S. Gamespot what the f*ck is wrong with your HORRIBLE encoding skills? :S
Know this before you buy it; The gameplay is awseome, fair storyline, cool customization. But here´s the downpart and its BIG, finished the game in 03:50 time played. Very disappointing.
@Zoomeye Do they beef it out to a 12 hour game with cut scenes like they did with MGS4?
Well dip shit, tthreat23 said "Start playing on hard" and you just said "check, done it" so basicly it look's like you are saying you did hard mode in 3:50...
@LukeWesty No i did not say that. I finished this game first time on normal in 3:50. Harder took me a while longer ofc! Im just saying this because the average gamer are most often playing on normal difficulty. But since your so smart you already know that, don´t you?
You finished this game first time through on hard in 3:50... you are talking bollox little man
generic hack and slash button masher.
kiss the real metal gear solid goodbye, this is a new IP with an name good ol' name that will sell copies by tricking consumers who either don't know the truth or aren't paying attention.
don't take the bait, skip this one.
@buccomatic I would say it was on the consumers shoulders to be more educated about their purchases, then. Don't scoff at the game because it is different from its predecessors. Makes you seem very closed minded.
ugh i'm probably going to get slammed for this but i've never really enjoyed the MG series...too mellow dramatic and way way way too many cut scenes that make almost no fricking sense at all. I recognize the brilliance of the gameplay though and this new direction looks interesting to me. I kinda enjoy the button mashing stuff mixed with skilled based stuff too. Ninja Gaiden sigma was awesome. Can't wait to play!
Ok the reviewer...no disrespect intended but omg bro you can't read through a review like this you sound like a robot. i had to turn it off i just couldn't listen to his rehearsed efforts to read through his review. gotta sound natural man even if you say uhhh, or uhmm a few times this was just fricking aweful bro.
@philMcCrevis Never liked the gameplay in the series. At least with the older games like MGS2, which was cool, they were pushing the technology and the stealth component was a real part of the game. In MGS4, that incredibly long movie during which you had to play a bit of game every 90 minutes to keep watching, the stealth element varied between poorly done and nigh on irrelevant. Mostly irrelevant. At least Kojima seems to have recognised that pretty pictures and not stealth is where the strengths currently lie.
Anyone know where you can buy it for pc? It says on this site it is for pc as well, can't find it on Amazon. A link would be great thanks
There is no PC version, it was cancelled when Platinum took over the project
I've never owned a hack/slash game and am looking to buy one. How does this compare to the gold standards of bayonetta and god of war?
A really good game. Prob's take the first play through to fully master the ability's but when you get there is really good.
I've just finished my first play-through! The game is loads of fun! Fast paced action, good soundtrack and the combos and moves you can use and combine sync seamlessly and perfectly! I really enjoyed it. A bit small though. A few more play hours would be welcome.
This looks awesome. I'll be picking this one up soon. Great job, Platinum! I've only played the demo but I'm sold.
This game doesn't let up - it's actually ridiculous! I know this will divide opinion blah, blah, blah. Me personally I've enjoyed it since the moment it dropped through my mail box on Friday! To me it's a prime example of how to take a beloved franchise like Metal Gear (Which I unquestionably adore) Entrust it to another studio who then builds on the universe without tarnishing it at the same time.
This proves my point that Platinum Studio's are one of the best (If not the best) Studio's to emerge in the last 10 years. Everything they touch is gold!
