E3 '07: Mega Man Star Force Hands On

We jacked into Mega Man's upcoming adventure in cyberspace.

Even though the Mega Man series is known for its side-scrolling antics, the series has entered some pretty strange waters, none weirder than those of Mega Man Battle Network, and soon, Mega Man Star Force. If you aren't familiar with Mega Man Battle Network, it's like a cross between Mega Man, Pokémon, and Norton Antivirus--an accessible, kid-friendly series of RPGs that takes place in a world where boss robots have been replaced by rogue computer viruses.

The story will follow the Internet patrolling exploits of Geo Stellar, a boy with an apt name, for his story will unfold both on the ground and in cyberspace. In the real world, Geo will travel around looking for cards that will help him in his battles with his enemies. Then, when you're ready for him to fight, you'll flip down your visor and switch to the "Wave World." Here you can actually see and walk in the Internet as it courses through normal reality. But watch out--the Mega equivalent of spam, keyloggers and trojans, are floating all over the place, and even though you can literally see cyberspace itself, you can't see them.

That means random battles. But these aren't your usual RPG turn-based affairs. Rather, they take place on a 3x5 grid, where you and your enemies dodge and attack each other in real time. You can always shoot at them with your regular blaster, or you can pause the action and equip special attack cards for one-time use. The result is a battle scheme that feels more like action than RPG, and should stay fresh because of it.

Now, Geo only has so many special cards to choose from, but if he adds a friend to his network, called a "Brother," he can use all of that person's special attacks as well. What's more, for every person in your network who has a specific skill, that skill gains a level. So if three people have plasma blade, that attack hits much harder than it would if only Geo had it.

This collectible-card scheme has applications outside of the game as well. There will be three versions of Mega Man Star Force--Leo, Dragon, and Pegasus--each with its own elemental focus (oddly, Dragon's is wood). So, if you buy Leo and your friend buys Dragon, you can trade him fire skills for wood.

Whichever version you wind up getting, Mega Man Star Force should be an interesting RPG adventure that will take you far into the future of the Mega Man storyline, and hopefully put a few bus rides in your past when it hits store shelves on August 7.

I'm hoping that the game is better than it looks. Nevertheless, I'm still going to buy it.

Even though i am a megaman uber feen... i have to admit this one looks very sketchy. i like the side scrolling and i think that the behind player view is not going to go very well. i wish the megaman team luck with making this !!!

hi from all megaman star force fanatix....i advice that u should choose dragon version it is the strongest among 3 admin..it can heal in grass......hmm pegasus it good for combo like with electric battle card..but leo is the weakest...i know that leo's attack is very strong but it doesnt have good benefits in battle....

Hmm, I'm undecided on this one. I'd like to pick it up, and I'm familiar with the (somewhat corny) story since it's one of the animes the group I'm with subs, but it's got less priority than, say, Phoenix Wright 3 or Rune Factory.

Mmm, the Aura's were fun to abuse along with the Shuriken battle prog in MMBN3Blue

Actually you don't have to get all 3 versions. You can get most of the stuff including the 3 different forms in one version. the only difference I think is the 5 battle cards. Here's the differences between the 3 versions. Pegasus version 01. PegasusMagicGX: Pegasus appears and uses Pegasus Magic to freeze the enemy field for 450 damage. 02. Aqua+50: +50 damage to an aqua card.(*) 03. OxTackle: Ox Fire's 420 fire-damage Ox Tackle attack. 04. BreakCountBomb: A 600 damage fire bomb that damages you as well. You MUST shield against it. 05. DarkSword: A 360 damage sword with dreamsword range. Leo version 01. LeoKingdomGX: Leo appears and uses Leo Blazer to scorch the enemy field for multiple hits of 40 damage. 02. Fire+50: +50 damage to a fire card. (*) 03. GeminiThunder: GeminiSparkB and GeminiSparkW stand together and perform Gemini Thunder for 400 damage. Stuns 04. DarknessHole: Kills off any enemy with less than 250 HP, or a boss less than 500 HP. 05. DreamAura: An aura unbreakable by attacks lesser than 200 damage. Dragon version 01. DragonSkyGX: Dragon appears and uses Dragon Cyclone to encircle and strike the enemy for multiple hits of 50 damage. 02. Wood+50: +50 damage to a wood card. (*) 03. GorgonEye: OphiuchusQueen performs GorgonEye, a laser that strikes an entire column for 550 damage. 04. DestroyMissile: Massive missiles target enemies on normal panels and fire 12 times for 50 damage each. 05. PoisonPharaoh: A tough statue poisons the enemy field. I'm getting Leo version because the attacks to other stuff than just damage the enemies and the DreamAura can be useful in bad situations.

I loved Mega Man Battle Network and was very sad to see the series end, so I'm pleased to see that its gameplay will live on in this new series. I'm eagerly awaiting this one; it looks good.
