While fun, the flaws from the original hasn't been fixed, and sticks out even worse, along with a tougher difficulty.

User Rating: 7 | Medievil 2 (Platinum) PS
MediEvil was a success, so unsurprisingly; a sequel was in order to this short lived series... 2 years later. It's another game that brings back a lot of memories. I remember playing the demo a lot, then got the game, which I never finished...., without cheat codes. Well, following the completion of MediEvil 1, I felt it was time to play MediEvil 2... Without cheating.

Story
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In 1386, Sir Daniel Fortesque was resurrected, unknowingly, by the evil sorcerer Zarok, who wanted to raid Gallowmere with his undead army, but was defeated by Dan, who then went to the Hall of Heroes, finally becoming a legend and laid himself to rest.

500 years later, some douche named Lord Palethorn has gotten hold of Zarok's spell book and essentially brings zombies back to life and invades London (so Zombie apocalypse isn't a total stranger to London I suppose). For once, Dan isn't revived by this; though a ghost named Winston (hahahaha) has awaken him, hoping he can resolve this mess.

The story hasn't really improved a lot since last time. There's nothing special here, but it's enjoyable, and there's a bit more humor this time around, which makes the game lose its slight horror aspect from the first game. It's not perfect and it does have one plot hole. But overall, it's an enjoyable story, but it's neither better, nor worse than the first one.

Gameplay
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The gameplay haven't really changed either. It's more or less the same gameplay, with the same controls, with some minor tweaks. For one thing, you can switch between weapons with L1 + Square, and later on in the game, you can put Dan's head on one of those moving hands, but aside from that, it's all the same as before... though there is a small level where you get to do some boxing. The controls aren't perfect, but it's pretty funny to watch.

Dan does get a updated arsenal though, which now includes guns, which only gives Dan a slightly better advantage against the enemies, and you do get a shield which gives you limited invincibility, but beyond that, not a lot has changed.

The game's puzzles are still, a little tough, but not so tough you need a walkthrough. Neatly, the game's puzzles also revolves around killing enemies, which adds some small variety, though this is repeated too many times during one certain level.

While the gameplay haven't changed, so the flaws haven't been fixed at all. But for some reason, the game is much harder. Basically, if Dan is attacked, then all his attack motions are cancelled, so most of the combat is just spent running around, tapping X or Square, in hoping that you'll hit something, and it can get really freakin' annoying later on. And of course, our annoying friend, Mr. Bad Camera makes an appearance, which for some reason has also gotten worse than before, which doesn't help the platform sections at all... which is twice as frustrating as before. It wouldn't be so bad, if you could just go back to previous levels and restore health, but there are only small health tubes that respawns, and now the tracks that has life flowing out of them, so if you find yourself with very little health, then you'll be screwed.

Another thing that hasn't changed is the length. It still takes around 6 hours to complete, and there's an alternative ending if you collect all of the chalices.

5.5

Graphics
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The graphics at least looks better than the first one. Dan's a bit more detailed, the environments doesn't have those odd disappearing issues and the game manages to run well, though there is one or two sections where it slows down, due to too many enemies on the screen. The game's cut-scenes have improved, and they actually look really good... for a PS1 game.

9.5

Sound
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The music has the good ol' familiar themes from the first one, but it's generally good, and the voice acting (while they still talk a little too low) is actually good, with some good lines. Dan is also talking a little clearer, and he has some good moments.

9.5

For the PS3 players
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The game runs well on the PS3... sometimes. There are moments, when the game starts slowing down really badly, and music (which is looped) will just stop and not start again, and in cut-scenes, the voices won't appear... though all this can be fixed by pausing the game.

Overall
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MediEvil 2 is still fun, and it is a good sequel to the first one. However, the gameplay is still the same as in the original, albeit the difficulty has risen, so it's more difficult. The game is worth to check out, for fans of the original (such as myself), but if you didn't like the first one, then you probably won't like this one either.
