Starts off with a bang but ultimately fails to live up to the nostalgic charm of the original

The original MediEvil was a gem from my childhood, one of the nostalgic masterworks of video gaming that I often revisit when I want to remember why I am the gamer that I am today. The sequel on its own is a solid game yet it fails to deliver the same charm that the original did.

The game starts awesomely enough in a museum where all the dead, including you (Dan Fortesque of the previous game), are coming back to life. There are new dinosaur enemies and the first level leaves a good impression and the player hopeful that there is something fresh and special about MediEvil II. However, that hope soon where off not due to the fact that the game is all that bad, but because of the lack of charm. The characters and story from the original MediEvil were funny and memorable. Replacing the Hall of Heroes you are instead given the professors lab as a hope base which to collect weapons from collecting the hidden chalices and to receive your mission briefings. The professor manages in the whole game not to have as many funny lines as a single hero from the first game and Dan himself seems not to have the same drive and motivation to prove himself as in the original but is just there to save the world as a standard hero.

Despite my grimes about the storytelling experience. MediEvil II is a solid action adventure game otherwise. There are half a dozen creative boss battles that require analysis of the environment and an arsenal of both new weapons and old favorites which to defend yourself against the hordes of various demons and undead. Sometimes combat can be frustrating and the camera angles are bound to lead you into some cheap death situations. These problems make this already challenging game even more of a challenge in the worst way. In-between combat sections there are various mini-games to both add variety to the action and set the pace of the game.

As for the technical aspect, the sounds are recycled from ME1 and the graphics are a slight upgrade. Though again, the voice acting was much more charming and memorable in the first game.
