It doesn't get much more fun on the Playstation in my opinion.

User Rating: 9.5 | Medal of Honor Underground PS
Medal of honor - underground is the second in the Medal of honor series for the original Playstation. A first person shooter set in the Second World War with a difference. In the first game of the series the French female freedom fighter Manon had a role and in this sequel, we'll follow her struggle from the streets of Paris to North Africa and beyond.

Graphics:
Real footage from the war mixed with other real video greets you as you start up the game. You start off in the safe-house which works as a main menu where you can load , save, watch unlocked artwork and movies, tweak options and choose mission and style of play. All the menus, backdrops and artwork look awesome and there is even a French resistance soldier walking around the safe house as you browse the options. The in game graphics are seen from a first person view so the only thing you see of Manon (you) is your current weapon. All the weapons and explosions are really cool and the overall design of the enemy characters has been done with a lot of care for details and the vehicles are just a joy to watch. Beautiful game! The scenery is very varied and goes from the streets of an occupied Paris to Nazi strongholds and archeological sites to North Africa and creepy mansions. The level and stage designs are ace, and animation is smooth and the backgrounds full of detail. I also like the stills during loading.

Sound:
Awesome weapon blast sounds! I played through the game again for this review and I used my surround system and the sound-effects are just awesome. The terror you feel when you are low on health and you can hear a tank or motorcycle (with accompanied side-car and mounted machine gun!) advance towards your position is overwhelming. You can also hear the soldiers coming closer when you are behind cover and after a while you get better at judging where the enemies are and you can pop up or out from behind a corner and get them quickly. The ear deafening explosions of the bazooka SS-commandos and the tank cannons are perfect! While you explore the vast levels you'll hear a myriad of background noises; screams, gunfire, barking dogs, explosions etc. But you'll also hear music from local French pubs as you pass by and people cheering inside. From the Nazi bases loudspeaker systems you can hear announcements in German and officers shouting orders in their native language. Very atmospheric! The sound is definitely a huge part of the game! The classical orchestral music is also situation sensitive to what is going on in the game and becomes more and less intensive as something happens in the game.

Gameplay:
To be honest, the controls took some for me to get used to but once you get them down, there is a LOT of fun to be had with this game. The weapons available have a lot of variation to them. You'll fight with machine-guns, crossbows, stick hand-grenades, Molotov cocktails, silenced pistols, sniper rifles etc. What weapons are available vary and depends on where you are. Power ups include health and ammo power-ups. The missions are fantastically laid out and you can really tell that a lot of thought of has been going into the design of the missions and the way they tie the story together. After every mission you get a rating; average, good or excellent. You unlock cheat codes (secret codes as they are called in the game) conceptual art and real war footage video clips as you progress through the game. The story, I find surprisingly engrossing for a FPS/action game with its twists and turns and tales of deception, inhuman experiments bound into historically correct scenarios. The difficulty of the game is very high but never to the point where you just give up. Personally I find MoH Underground to be one of the most engrossing legacy shooters out there. There is a lot of variety in the ways you SHOULD tackle the missions. In some missions you need a forceful approach and take on the enemy head on. In other missions you need to sneak around and set explosives or find documents. There's even missions where you are equipped with a camera and go under-cover to get information and take photographs. The game is not groundbreaking or revolutionary, but it doesn't get much more fun on the Playstation in my opinion.

Lastability:
There are a number of difficulties to beat and the levels are quite different from one another and that creates some re-playability. The multiplayer is very fun as well, with a ton of character models to choose from and different sets of weapons. There are a few different multiplayer/split screen modes and you can tweak the minutes given and/or the kills required to win. Good fun.

Overall:
Medal of honor; underground is an awesome game and one that you will play again and again. It has fun multiplayer, but the real fun lies in the single-player campaign. It's everything a good game should be.
