"Die, clanner."

User Rating: 9.5 | MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries PC
This game was recently re-released for free, courtesy of Mech-Tek and boy was I nostalgic over this beast. The re-released version features several new mechs and weapons, most of which I don't particularly care for but don't really get in the way of playing the original content.

Good:
-Customization, customization, customization. Jump jets, tonnage, speed, heat sinks, armor allocation, weapon and ammo loadouts, electronic jammers, night vision, paint jobs -- it's all here.
-Choose from about 50+ different mechs each with various specializations, statistics, and history.
-About 40+ different weapons, some of which are very, very cool. Particle projectile cannons, missles, mortars, flamethrowers, machine guns, magnetized rifles, lasers, just about every weapon you could ever want and more.
-At the time of it's release the multiplayer was sensational. Sadly, nobody really hosts servers anymore and you can really only play locally against your friends.
-Commanding a full 8 mech lance with personnel that you appoint is pretty wicked.
-The campaign has a branching choice of missions depending on which contracts you decide to take on. It also gives you plenty of flexibility in outfitting your mercenary group. Very well done.

Bad:
-Duncan Fisher is a very entertaining commentator, but after a while he starts to get annoying and it's hard to concentrate on a battle when he's yakking away about how many kills I have.
-Some of the voice acting is even more horrendous than the voice acting in Mechwarrior: Vengeance. It's obvious that many actors attempted to pull off various stereotypical accents. They didn't.
-A couple of the campaign missions will automatically fail you for reasons that are somewhat unfair. There is a convoy escort mission in particular that I'm thinking of where the vehicles basically can't handle any damage at all.
-Like most mech games, you really won't enjoy this one without a joystick. Trust me.

I highly recommended that both fans and newcomers alike take a look at the Mek-tek website and try this game out -- it's free! Especially since Mechwarrior Online is due out this year and is also being developed as a free to play game.
