While this game suffers from many issues which prevent it from being great, there is still some fun to be found here.

There are three playable characters and they each have their own story. The three stories all intertwine and through playing all of them you will be able to understand more about the story and how/why all the events go together. Sonic's story is cliché'; it revolves around him rescuing a princess who always gets kidnapped - ultimately they end up falling in love with each other (YUCK) Shadow's story revolves around his battle with a character called Mephilis and new comer Silver's story revolves around him trying to save the future from the flames of disaster called Iblis. Being lead to believe that Sonic is responsible, he goes to the past to shape the future. Now there are some quite good scenes in Shadow and Silver's stories. The cut-scenes and stories do have potential to be great. Alas filler plot points and other issues let them down; but the potential is there - you can clearly see it.
Lets go over the game play now starting with the characters. Sonic runs through the levels using his homing attack on enemies, grinding on rails and doing the light speed dash along rings - all the stuff from the Adventure games pretty much, as you get from point A to B. He does move a little slow however. In some segents of some levels there will be a "Super Speed" section. This is where Sonic zooms and you have very little control over him as he rages through the level. You can steer and jump but that's it. Sonic will take damage if he crashes into an object - which you will do a lot until you memories the routes. In some levels Sonic will be with the princess Elise. He retains his abilities from before but now Elise can generate a shield so that Sonic can run over quick sand and deep water. In some levels you will be able to control Tails or Knuckles briefly. It's not that fun though I admire the variety. Tails can fly and throw ring bombs at enemies and Knuckles can glide and has some really clunky fist attacks.
Shadow's gameplay is similar to Sonic's. His moves are more or less the same, but more overpowered. There are lots more enemies to beat up. Instead of Super Speed segments Shadow will occasionally have to control vehicles such as jeeps, paragliders and hover crafts. These all have the ability to shoot enemies. Overall Shadow's game play is slower paced than Sonic's. For one thing he moves slower, but often you will need to beat up a certain amount of enemies before you can move on. As opposed to Tails and Knuckles taking over in certain places this time we have Rouge and E123 Omega. Rouge has Knuckles' gliding abilities combined with Tails' bomb throwing gimmick to create a hybrid between the two. Omega can glide and shoot enemies with his lasers.
Silver's game play stand out the most, but it's also the least enjoyable of the three. He doesn't run around very fast, but can control objects using his telekinetic powers. You can make Silver pick up boxes and hurl them at enemies. He can also hover short distances using these powers. In certain level segments you will be able to play as Amy or Blaze. Amy has the ability to jump high and can turn invisible for some reason. Blaze is fast and controls the best out of all the additional characters. Her move set is similar to Sonic's - she even has a homing attack like ability (Push A and then X whilst in the air)
The characters all have the same levels and go through specific sections in a specific order, so that helps add to the variety.
The levels and game events are found in a hub world called Soleanna. There are three sections to this hub world overall. They are very big, are easy to get lost in and interfere with the pace of the game as you can be wandering around for ages trying to figure out where you are supposed to be going. In these hub worlds there are also missions. Fortunately the vast majority of these are optional, but the loading makes them almost unbearable. Talk to a person - load screen, the person'll explain what you have to do - load screen - the mission starts - load screen the person congratulates you and you get your rank - load screen - then you can finally be on your way.
The game is a really glitchy mess. There is one really bad glitch in Shadow's version of Crisis City where you have to use your homing attack on enemies to cross a bottomless pit. There is an invisible wall between two of the enemies if you try to attack the enemy you will hit this invisible wall and stop dead and fall into the all consuming lava. The only way to avoid this is manoeuvre Shadow around this invisible wall to the building you are trying to get to. There is another bad glitch with Knuckles and Rouge. When you climb up a wall, trying to get back off is a pain - they just won't let go. You can get off but it is really hard. There is even a glitch which will enable Omega to glide forever if you just mash the A button whilst air-born.
Now the thing that prevents this game from getting a 7 of even higher is, for me, not the glitches, not the loading - but the fact that while the game does try to add variety it feels a bit samey and can get boring pretty quickly.
At first glance the graphics look quite nice. But after a while you'll notice some really odd animations, bland textures and the fact that Sonic's model looks really really weird. The high quality CG cut-scenes do look quite nice though.
This game is probably best appreciated for it's sound track.. Though there are quite a lot of bland tunes in there, there are some amazing pieces in here. I like the His World theme (all 6 million versions of it) and Silver's theme "Dreams of an Absolution" is nice. Other notable tracks include Wave Ocean - The inlet, Solaris Phase 2 and Flame Core - Volcano. Overall the games good tracks compensate for the bland tracks. The music is overall very good.
The game controls horribly to be blunt. The characters just slide out of control all over the place. However in contrast to characters going all over the place, it also feels incredibly stiff. As a result of bad controls and glitches the game is harder than it should be.
I suggest rent the game or borrow it. It could have been better if the game play had more depth; it feels quite shallow and as a result the game gets boring quickly. Those like me, who are willing to look past the game's technical flaws should be able to get a decent kick out of it. The music is pretty cool. The game has buckets of potential you can clearly see it, alas it fell flat due to poorly executed story despite good concepts and shallow game play which gets boring after a short amount of time. Recommended for hard core Sonic fans - particularly those who loved Adventure 1 as this is most comparable to that one. Overall the game is decent in my opinion.
