Running Max Pain 2 on Windows 7 64 bit - trying the "replace .exe" fix

So after you install the game go here first to update to V 1.01
After you install the patch, you might want to restart your PC (it cant hurt)
Then you will have to go to this site to download the fixed .exe
the one you want is called: "Max Payne 2 v1.01 [ENGLISH] No-CD/Fixed EXE"
So I've installed the game, downloaded from GameStop. It looks like patch 1.01 installs OK. Then replaced the .exe file as described, but no dice. Nothing comes up except the little spinning wheel very briefly.
I'm wondering if there is a problem with paths. The GameStop application auto installs to C:\\Program Files (x86)\2K Games\Max Payne 2 - The Fall of Max Payne\. And you can't change this.
I pointed patch 1.01 to install to this directory, and, as I said, it looked like it worked.-Then I replaced the .exe. And then it still didn't load.
By default, the patch installs to something like C:\\Program Files (x32)\Rockstar Games\Max Payne 2\). But as I said, I did change it to the above-mentioned directory. But maybe I'm missing something? I'm not so good with this sort of thing....
Perhaps it matters where you download the game from? I've tried two sources now, and the installation process is different. The 1.01 patch didn't even see my first installation (I can't even remember where I got it from).
Did you install from disc?
Anyway, any thoughts now that I've resurrected this topic? Would like to play this before MP 3....
