Hi guys, I'm thinking about buying a new gaming pc (currently play an Intel laptop with the Intel HD Graphics 3000 integrated card) and was wondering if I could get some advice. I'm in the UK and not looking to spend a vast amount (ideally not much more than £7-800, £1000 would be too much) but I'm not really sure where to begin, so advice or suggestions where else to look (I'm sure there are forums for this sort of thing) would be much appreciated.
I don't need super-high performance, but I'd like to be able to play new releases at medium settings for a good while before needing to upgrade again.

http://tinyurl.com/FalconGuidePick one of those options, get the parts listed in the row, put 'em all together, add a couple hundred extra for the operating system, and you're good to go.

That's a pretty good and up-to-date guide. It'll at least give you an idea of the parts you want.
If you can spring it, I suggest an SSD drive. I have a 128GB drive, which holds two to three games at a time (which is all I play at a time anyways) including the OS, loads incredibly fast and has no need to defrag. I've had it for over a year now and I love it.
The other drawback is cash, which is a factor for you. If it's too expensive to get one, don't worry about it.

My video card (560 Ti 1GB) isn't even on that list and I can still play this and Skyrim at 60+ FPS. 16 gigs of RAM is pretty sweet, though. Just don't get G.Skill RAM.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. Can I ask what are the most importance parts not to skimp on besides power supply? I think graphics card is probably the most important factor but I imagine it's not the only one by any means.

Power supply is very important, otherwise your powerful computer will just crash all the time or even get damaged due to bad power.
80% of the system instability issue of new computers can often be traced to a bad power supply (and the second being heat).

There's always getting a good case as well. If you have one that's good enough you can keep reusing it down the road. I know I plan on keeping my HAF-X for a while.

It's not on the list because a similarly priced and performing card of the newest gen. uses less power, and is therefore a little better.

Try to look at other people's gaming rigs and try to make sure that the processor, graphics card and RAM are all on the same level. Say for example, you have a processor that is too weak, you won't be making the most of the graphics card and RAM.
