Does multiplayer actually affect the story?

I know the multiplayer increases galactic readiness, which is the percentage of how much war assets you get, but people are saying you can get all the endings without touching multiplayer as long as you have enough war assets. So does multiplayer ACTUALLY affect the story, or is it really way for people to not fully explore the single player and still get the ending they want?

It is as you say. It just helps fill the void between your TMS and your EMS if you chose to split your time between the multiplayer and the single player.

There is one other effect that multiplayer can have on single player: if you level up a multiplayer character to level 20, you get the option to "promote" them to the single player mode as a small War Asset.
