About the weapon upgrades found?

I have been playing this game for about 10 hours now and have been using the guide only for the purpose of being a checklist for items during missions. I was just wondering if anyone knew if say for instance in an incomplete mission I would find "SMG high caliber barrel I" but I have already purchased said upgrade from a kiosk at the citadel, would it still show up, but as the upgraded "SMG high caliber barrel II"? or not at all? I just would like to know before I waste all of my credits on upgrades since 'Insanity' play through is pretty challenging...

Most of the upgrades found in shops are upgrades that you missed in the field i believe. not sure if its true, but thats what it seems like to me. And yeah what Chosen One said, if you find an upgrade you already have, it goes up a level, same with buying one.
