A poorly realized adaptation. And poorly timed, too.

User Rating: 5.3 | Marvel Trading Card Game PSP
Marvel heroes and trading cards. A match made in heaven. I mean, what's easier to remember, generic fantasy or anime monsters or Marvel heroes your've been reading about for decades? Plus, the art is cooler.

But not on the PSP. Unless you're already a player of the tabletop game looking for an online fix (which this game delivers), there's nothing here for you. The look of the game is barebones and dry, to the point of reducing the art on the cards to a little window on the corner of the screen, which in a PSP is just a few pixels wide. Sound is equally simple and after a while you'll turn it off completely and wonder why you left your iPod home (come to think of it, a custom soundtrack option would have made wonders for this game).

After presentation, the interface is the worst offender. It makes no effort to be streamlined or save you some effort. The game stops for no good reason, unless you set "autopass" to high, even when you can't act at all. Autopass alleviates this to some extent, but why on earth would you want to turn it off, as it is by defautl? Text is small and hard to read, and since the card display window is also small you're often forced to scroll up and down using the analog nub to see the powers of the card... just there's no progress bar to tell you how far down the description you are, so you'll often miss stuff. Deck editing is a nightmare and you'll think it's just not there until you happen to hit the button to display options by chance. At least the game sees fit to outline the cards you can play at any given time.

This game could have been a diversion, if not for a little contextual detail: Konami themselves have put out the first good Yu-Gi-Oh game ever, and it's on the PSP. It looks good, plays smooth, goes online and has a story mode that actually looks like a game. If you're a card game freak and want to play one on your PSP THAT's what you're getting. This one is for rabid Marvel fans or people who only play this specific card game ONLY.
