Mario Kart Wii is kind of a let down after the *new* factor wears off. The wheel is the main reason. Nintendo clearly wanted to use the motion controls of the Wii to create a gimmick where everyone could play the game. It's too easy to attach the accessory and let it do most of the work for you. One knock against the difficulty is the rubber band A.I. Most of the time, especially on the final lap, you're gonna be bombarded with items. It's not uncommon to be hit with 4-5 blue shells, lighting, and the over used squid. Very little of the race is actually racing. So why did I say the wheel is easy? Using the wheel over the controller gives the player an advantage over the other control schemes. Try using both and you will see just how easy it is. As a long time Mario Kart fan, I was eagerly anticipating this release only to be let down. I still play it to this day but can't help to wonder what might of been if they would have just improved what Double Dash and Mario Kart 64 did great. Even after completing 100% of the game, I'm still waiting for the next release to come.
Pros= Graphics, numerous characters, On-line play
Cons=Tracks weren't as memorable, wheel accessory, rubber band A.I., too many baby characters(do we really need baby, Luigi, Mario, Peach, etc....?)
What needs to happen in the next installment=Go back to the better days of Mario Kart 64 and Double Dash. Stop with the gimmicks and rubber band A.I. More tracks and an even greater influence on weight classes/cars will add depth. Letting the races being determined by the drivers and not the overly cheap items would be a needed addition.
Should a newcomer to the series buy it? No, better to pass and get a earlier version.
Should a fan buy it? Yes, longtime fans will support the series even when certain releases fall short.
