Disagree with me all you want, but Double Dash is the best in the Mario Kart series. 8.8
The gameplay is standard racing with Mario characters, and you got weapons to help you out. Stuff like Banana peels, fake item boxes, star, and favorite being the red shell.
A mushroom gives you an extra boost of speed. But, doesn't that mean that the go-karts engines is running on fungus? Wow, even Nintendo knows how to get our gasoline problems fixed! ;)
Now you got a Grand Prix mode. That is 50 cc, 100 cc, and 150 cc. The difference? You slightly go faster. Theres also an unlockable Mirror Mode, and i hate this mode, the stage is basically mirrored, example, instead of doing a right turn, in mirror mode, you do a left turn. And it utterly confuses me.
Now, the Multiplayer in this is the main reason to own this game, you can play with your friends in a race, or in Battle Mode. Battle Modes got three modes,
Balloon Mode, where you pop three balloons, the one with the most wins.
Bob-omb Mode, where you pretty much throw bombs are all over the place
and Star Mode, where you need to get the star before the time runs out.
The tracks themselves are well designed, and fun. Especially in multiplayer. You got a good amount of character, and you have to pick 2 each. Because, its called Double Dash. I forgot to mention this but, even the character have thier own special item. Mario has a fireball, Toad has a golden mushroom. And DK has a big banana.......no, a banana that you eat.....that made it even worse.
There are some unlockable characters, vechles, and another set of tracks/cup to race. But well after you unlock everything, you'll just get tired of it. Theres some replayablity, and its a great multiplayer game, though.
The soundtrack is catchy. The graphics, though basic-nintendo visuals, there still look rather good. And the controls are excellent.
What bothers me for many years is the score Gamespot gaved it. 7.9? 7.9!!!? Are you serious? Wait, they are. Well, Why So Serious?!
Disagree with me all you want, but Double Dash is the best in the Mario Kart series. Its good gamecube fun. And if you STILL got you Gamecube, or if you have a Wii. And you haven't played it, what are you waiting for? Buy it! While your at it, buy 4 controllers, get some friends, and play Grand Prix.
