This has great multiplayer. Unfortunately, the single player wears a little thin.

Another classic from Nintendo's past has found its way to the Virtual Console. Widely praised by fans, and criticised by Gamespot, how does Mario Kart 64 really hold up?

Well, unless you are into multiplayer, you may want to pass.

In single player, you are given a coice of 2 gameplay modes. Mario Grand Prix and Time Trials are at your disposal. You choose you character from the 8 available, and you start racing. Inf Grand Prix, you choose a competition you want to enter. There are 4 to choose from, and each has 4 unique tracks. Players aer awarded points based on how well they finish. You must, however, finish 4th to be able to advance. The racer with the most points wins the gold trophy at the end.

In Time Trials, you select your car and which course you want to run on. Your goal is simply to run the course alone, in the best possible time.

There is, of course, more to the racing than this. Some courses have multiple routes you can run on. Each one also has boxes that you can run through. Hitting a box will award you with an item to help you in the race, These can either be offensive of defensive. They can be shells that will slow your opponents down, speed bursts or even banana peels to drop on the track.

The single player, though fun, can wear thin fairly quickly. The real action is in the multiplayer.

The are 2 options in multiplayer. There are standard VS races, and there is battle mode. In battle, up to 4 players have 3 baloons attatched to their kart. by using the pickups found around the area, you have to try and hit your opponents. This will remove 1 baloon from their kart. The last player remaining with at least 1 baloon wins.

In adition, Grand Prix can be played with 2 players.

Mario Kart 64 looks good, expecially for an N64 game. Not only are all the karts unique, but there is alot of variety in the courses. The framerate hold up very well, except in multiplayer where it can be a bit choppy.

There are a few voiceshere, but not many. The sound is made up mainly of great, catchy music and good sound effects.

This port isn't flawless. The classic controller doe not have support for a controller pack like the original N64 controller did, so you cannot save ghosts in the Time Trials. The classic controller for the Wii is also missing the second Dpad, so the functions that were originally mapped to the C buttons can be hard to use properly.

Though it's not flawlwss, Mario Kart 64 gives a great multiplayer ecperience for a good price. If you have the original, just hold on to that. But otherwise, this is something to consider picking up.
