We fire a few shots in the upcoming Xbox Live! version of a classic Bungie shooter.
Everybody knows Halo 3 is one of the biggest games at E3 07, but not everyone is aware of its precursor, Bungieís seminal Marathon series. Well, Xbox Live! Arcade is looking to change that by releasing Marathon: Durandal this year. With a fun, throwback single-player campaign on top of two different flavors of versus play, Durandal should be an Xbox Live! achievement in and of itself.
Although we havenít played the campaign in over 10 years, we recently got a taste of Durandalís awesome four-player, split-screen offline multiplayer here at E3. The level was instantly familiar because it was the precursor to Midship from Halo 2, complete with a heavy emphasis on rocket launchers! We ran around fragging each other with rockets, machine guns, pistols, and even our fists: It was classic first-person shooter deathmatch play in one of the most classic shooters of all time.
Of course, Durandal will also feature online multiplayer for up to eight players, with presumably several levels and match types. While first-person shooters have certainly come a long way since 1995, theyíve also gotten much more expensive. Durandal, on the other hand, should provide a solid dose of shooter fun for you and your friends, online or off, for a price that could make the bargain bin look expensive.
The controls are simple: The R trigger fires and the X button changes weapons. Thatís about all there is to it, besides of course, running around. Interestingly, you canít jump in Durandal, and it takes a little time to get used to it. Still, the most important elements are intact (moving, shooting, pawning your friends) and should provide plenty of reason to check out Marathon: Durandal when it goes live on Live! later this year.
NO. Keep this off XBL. I am sick of crap games coming onto the system, and the companies not even doing major graphic overhauls. I, for one, think they need to stop throwing garbage on XBL. This is just another Quake/Doom Clone. Im' sick sick sick. Dont make me go buy a "BS3". All I am saying is that I want real games. Even the Wii is digging in the crate for Blockbuster old Games, (Bonks Adventure, Aliencrush, etc etc). XBL was doing good with Contra, golden Axe, sonic... yes, these are the good games. Give me some original content that makes it worth 50 bucks a year to be on XBL.
This will be number 2 on the list of XBLA games I've actually bought. Right behind Alien Hominid HD.
Looks like the arcade will have another great addition to its library.I loved Doom for the arcade and hope to start pwning my friends again on marathon,as that was definitely a classic shooter.Hope it comes out soon though, hurry up Microsoft!! :P
PC Marathon 2 multiplayer was really buggy and unsupported. Xbox live will change that. Long live bungie.
What's the point? You can get it for PC for free. Minus the console controls and the new updated graphics.
I loved the first Marathon, and this looks to be shaping up well. This I wil the first Arcade game in a long time I buy.
It's kind of dumb they didn't just start with Marathon 1, although I realize it was never ported to Windows, I know that Aleph One is open source and could be tailored to X-Box to run the whole Marathon Trilogy. I guess it's because Marathon 1 has unofficial support for Aleph One and actually runs through a mod. I would've rather liked to see a graphically updated version. I've played a Marathon 1 total conversion for the first Unreal Tournament that was recently released, and it even looks good despite running on a 8 year old engine. From looking at the screenshots, it does look like they're using significantly high resolution textures than the original.
You could always download it for free from Bungies website: http://source.bungie.org/get/ They made it free in 2005 (All three chapters).
i want this! this is the guys that ported it's website they say 8 player co-op!!! http://184.108.40.206/games/game/?id=7009
I really hope it has co-op. I've only played Marathon 1 and that was like... not really even playing it hahaha.
