Does some things right, some things not so much

In the end, I was just left feeling a combination of "wtf" and "meh", because the ending makes no sense whatsoever. There's a very paper-thin story, but for all the purpose it serves, it might as well not be there. Max's character undergoes no arc, there's no redemption, and you just don't really feel anything positive for him in the end.

So forget the story, maybe it's the charm of "Mad Max" that there's no story (this is my first exposure to any Mad Max media so maybe that's how it rolls). Is everything else about the game great?

Meh ... again, it's hit and miss. The car combat could have been great, but it feels sluggish and a bit of a drag. Your car is not very responsive at the beginning and the only way to improve it is to grind until you can install certain upgrades. But the best upgrades are saved until fairly late into the main story, by which point I had already grinded a fair amount.

Hand-to-hand combat was one thing I enjoyed, though arguably, it's quite easy. Maybe it was easy for me because I kept investing points in upgrading Max himself. Combat is not complex, you just need to time your counters (or jump out of the way of the unblockable ones) and if you unlock the skill to break a grapple with a shiv, you've basically unlocked a way to deal with one of the most difficult enemies. Hilariously enough, I thought the "boss battles" (such as the top dogs, etc.) were easier than some of the other battles when Max had to fight multiple enemies.

That's because every boss fights more or less the same way. He will wield a heavy 2-handed weapon that he'll swing at you, which you can't block, so you jump/roll out of the way and then quickly land some blows on him while he recovers. In some boss battles, the boss is joined by a few minions who distract you. But in these battles, so long as your camera is on the boss, you can see him coming from a mile away and still have plenty of time to jump out of the way.

I like that there are quite a few Quality of Life features like fast travel, though I wish they had disabled it in case you were detected by enemies or in the middle of combat.

But at the end of the day, I like games that have a good story and that make the grind enjoyable. Mad Max doesn't have any story to speak of, and the grind is tolerable at best.
