With over 11 million subscribers, the behemoth World of Warcraft has enlisted a vast community of gamers. However, for a community as large as WOW's, it noticeably lacks a major print periodical. That will change soon, though, as the game mag publisher Future announced yesterday that the massively multiplayer online role-playing game will receive its own official quarterly exclusively for the game's myriad players.

World of Warcraft: The Magazine--a collaboration between Blizzard and Future--will allow current game subscribers to enroll in the magazine starting August 21 for a $40 one-year subscription or $70 two-year subscription in the US. Blizzard plans to showcase the publication at this weekend's BlizzCon expo in Anaheim, California.

The upcoming periodical will be spearheaded by a number of game publication veterans, including Julian Rignall (Virgin) as executive director, Ryan Vulk (Wired) as art director, and Dan Amrich (Official Xbox Magazine senior editor). The forthcoming magazine's publisher, Future, is no stranger to gaming, as it currently runs the Official Xbox Magazine, Official PlayStation Magazine, Nintendo Power, and Maximum PC.

"We're bringing together an international team of player-writer experts to create in-depth articles about World of Warcraft's design, art, lore, and community, as well as all aspects of its gameplay," Rignall said.

The magazine's 148-page inaugural issue will be "out in time for the fifth anniversary of World of Warcraft" of November 2009 in English, German, Spanish, and French. The upcoming publication will be sold through the game's account management page, and the magazine's now-live Web site.

Seriously this is retarded. 40 dollars for 4 issues?! They just keep trying to rip you off.

Why would someone pay for this? All they need to do is visit a major WoW fansite or 2 to get more up to date information for free than they'll be able to find in their magazine they have to pay for.

This is silly. It's a big enough game to use something like this, but that's what the fan websites are for. Don't they realize most news and informational printing industries are dying horrible deaths?

Wumpscutnut, I cant possibly agree more with you. I'm sick tired of lil kids and other haters that call people who play WoW nerds or no life's. They are the ones that thumb down every WoW player that actually speak up.
I play WoW but i don't let the game consume my mind, If people cant control how much they play its their problem not the game's. WoW is a really fun game NUFF said.
Now kids go play "outside" and stop thumbing down all the good posts.

Seriously people, im so sick of hearing all the BS about how playing WoW makes you a nerd or means you have no life. Most of you kids who say tht stuff are probably the ones secretly logging in 5-6 hours a day. Its a videogame, as long as you don't let it consume your life its no different than playing any other game.

As for the mag goes, $40.00 is a bit expensive but no one is forcing you to buy it so there is really no reason to complain.

I bet you're all wandering what are they gonna talk about for 150 page on this magazine? Well future releases, addons new expansion like WoW : Cataclysm that is coming out soon. Truly there is plenty to talk about. And Sins-ofMosin, why would you want 2 player instances? Ive seen plenty of guys going through Nexus or Onixya only 2 people. I saw a guy soloing Onyxia. Check it on youtube. People always wonder wtf blizzard is going to release next and will it be for real, well the magazine will be a good reliable source. Im not promoting it lol, Im just saying its worth it.

Haha, $40 for a one-year subscription. Really? They'd better have some worthwhile stuff in that magazine...seriously.

As a gamer, what's the benefit of knowing how WoW was designed? And if I wanted to know more about the lore, I'd...pretty much just head over to WoWWiki, wouldn't I? And doing that's free!

The community...um, I think...everybody knows what the community is like. I honestly don't need a magazine for that. And as far as gameplay goes, you have...websites like elitistjerks and what not that give you tips and advice on all sorts of stuff.

What I'm saying is, what can you possibly offer me with your magazine that I cannot get anywhere else? And don't think that the Night Elf posters didn't cross my mind, haha. That's just stupid!

I was hoping to see a article about them dropping the fee or having weekly rates. They need solo or two player instances. Until that happens, I'll wait for Borderlands.

"Wow (no pun intended), Blizzard went from a undisputed releaser of AWESOME games to a company who soley care nothing about but extracting as much money from thier customers as possible. It is sad to see gaming go into this direction. Not only do gamers need to buy the game itself and all it expansions, the sub fee, now a magazine?? I can safley say I'm blizzard free, and VERY HAPPY about that. Goodluck going forward, but I'm not falling for this stupidity. There are other games that deserve my money."

You couldn't exaggerate more if you tried mate. It's a mere magazine that you don't have to buy. They are an expanding business not a charity, it's the developers that put passion in their work, the bussiness men exist to make the money.

anywho, this seems promising, I could probably get the same info online though but if it does come out in the UK I probably will end up getting it.
