Mechs, monsters, and mayhem... Oh my!

User Rating: 8 | Lost Planet 2 X360
Lost Planet 2 has been bashed on all sides. The critics were merciless. It's sales consistently poor, and theirs no hype or buzz for it. Word of mouth isn't damaging it's non existent. It was a sequel few expected and even fewer wanted... I was among that select few though. We got mechs and giant bugs! Flipping shooting using a grappling hook! Unloading mag after mag into what you think is the the monsters face... Its nerdy sci-fi action nirvanah.

The negatives stem from fairly poor design decisions and the usual cliched eastern staples. Bad anime style vioce acting coupled with ridiculous story and characters. At times simply corney and chessy. (but its also charming in that way) The bad design decisions are plentiful and well documented by all the critics and reviews. The slot machine (Stupiest **** ever!!!), the button configuration, stun/hit reaction to everything, friendly AI dumber then doo doo, invisible walls, menu after menu, loading screens galore, not allowing to join sessions in progress, etc. MP's utter disregard for fairness or balance is another flaw worth mentioning. It's definitely hurt the series expanding an online audience and community.

Graphically its rather impressive. A few frame rate hiccups and minor tearing but mostly unnoticable so acceptable. Wonderful environments and twisted creatures are plentiful in the world and give EDNIII (the planet) character and life. Sound quality is top notch from the soundtrack to varied sound effects.
LP2 also includes full character customization and unlockables/reward system. Plenty of gameplay variety, loads of content and secrets some of which several play-thrus wouldn't reveal. Like turning the support shield into a cannon or camouflaging as a data post plus more complex and cool things. Depth and replayabilty are definitely there.
I'm personally glad I gave the game a chance and have been pleased with this game more so then any recent AAA FPS. If your like me the geeky sci-fi type or just tired of the recent FPS offerings. Give this a try... A diamond in the ruff.
