Lost Odyssey is an excellent JRPG game that is easily overlooked, but should be played by any turn-based RPG fan.

While I agree that Lost Odyssey is a bit derivative, its story is no less interesting because of it. RPGs are all about the stories, and Lost Odyssey's story really draws you in from the beginning. There are some plot twists that one may see coming, but I still had fun going along for the ride.

The graphics in the game are good, but the textures at times appear like the game could have been on the Nintendo Wii. The environments are expansive, but separated by many, but short loading screens. I have read many reviews for the game, and several state the loading times are long, but never fear because patches and hard drive install have solved this issue. The character designs are traditionally Japanese, but interesting.

I enjoyed the gameplay because it was a bit more involving that the usual fare. Much like the timed button presses in the Paper Mario series affect the strength of your charater's attack, timed button presses have status effects on melee attacks. These status effects are granted via rings which are equipped to your characters and they run the gamut of effects from elemental damage effects to HP/MP drain. The player can craft rings from enemy drops post-battle.

I enjoyed the voice acting...it's some of the best voice acting I have heard in a JRPG. The sound effects added alot to the varied environments. The music is nicely orchestrated, and actually I found The Last Story's music reminiscent of this game's music.

I am just working on disc two now. The game is long, and there is plenty to do. Side quests, mini games, and dreams keep you busy on your hours long quest. The game is a joy to play and will keep you interested. I can even see me playing the game again to finish it quicker and make different choices to gain better stats. This game is most-def recommended.
