If a director creates a film that employs art directions that are inconsistent with what the film is trying to be, it's going to look bad.
In FF7's case, the game was presenting itself as a game with a more mature storyline as opposed to how kiddy the previous FF titles were. Depicting the adult main characters in chibi art form undermines this point.
In regards to FF7 and its spinoffs it's one step forward and two steps back. The spinoffs undo Cloud's character development by changing him from a copy of Zack with resolved mental issues to an emo guilt-filled nightmare.
Take Schindler's List for example: It used Black and White to show that all the color went out of the Jews' lives during the era of Nazi Germany and used color afterwards to illustrate how better off they were.
By comparison, Transformers is terrible. The art direction focuses more on marketing merchandise, as seen by the the car that Bumblebee was modeled on for the movie. Also, it's a movie that focuses more on humans instead of the struggle between the Autobots and Decepticons.
In short, Michael Bay doesn't know what he's doing when he's not blowing things up.
Not suggesting Transformer is anywhere near good movie.
Anyway, FF7 chibi form and adult form isn't something I'd put against FF7. It was transistion period. Just about all RPGs before had different models between battle and exploration before that. Going from 2D and 3D was huge hurdles to overcome during that time, and many games following FF7 still had chibi and adult forms.
Also large portion of FF7 isn't designed to give 1 to 1 ratio aspect. A lot of it is based on representation. If that wasn't the case, the world map would have actual cities straight up, instead of couple of mini buildings to indicate that's a town. It's not a complete cinematic styled game like Metal Gear Solid or Resident Evil, and game with the size of FF7, it's impossible to do that.
Also even if FF7 had mature theme, it wasn't supposed to be completely serious game. It was mixture of quirky and seriousness. Cloud's cross dressing, the date with Cloud, Turks, etc all had plenty of comical gags. None of that would've worked as smooth if the game had realistic character models.
FF7 using chibi form and adult form is something I say that's done by the design, and it worked quite well I think. - Jan 1, 2013 2:23 pm GMTleopardsnake posted...

By the way those who say FFVII made JRPGs popular... its role was largely irrelevant because Pokemon R/B came out the year after. Pokemon is by far the most popular JRPG franchise and the second most popular videogame franchise in existance (second only to Mario).
If anything FFVII is responsible for encouraging the flooding of the PSX and PS2 with B-grade JRPGs that had next to no innovation and that's why the genre has become a launghingstock ("JRPG = stgnant genre full of anime cliches, mindless grinding and slow as molasses battle systems"
.
At least the modern FF's tried to change this. Some suceeded (FFXIII), others did not (FFXIV).
You sound butthurt because VII's so popular and it made JRPGs popular.
Poor you.
You sound butthurt that people think FFVII is overrated.
Poor you.

While the battle system is good i couldn't stand Tidus and I just really hated the story. The world they created is interesting but the linear structure of the game doesn't do it any favors. Plus the Cloister of Trials, oh god, kill me now.
VII is a great game, its just its reputation has been hurt by square enix not being able to let it go. All the spinoff's and that awful advent children movie, ugh. - Jan 1, 2013 10:02 pm GMTFFXIII
2 direct sequels? Really?

They weren't direct sequels. FF VII came out when? 97/98?
When did DoC and AC come out again? Oh right....YEARS later...
With FF XIII, we are talking about direct game sequels coming out back to back on the same console with no release of any other FF console games in between, thus taking up a great majority of manpower and budget for the company when other games could be worked on....

Still AC is a direct sequel to 7 no matter how many year between them. Just like how KH CoM is a direct sequel to KH, not KH2.
Get your facts straight. Versus and 14 were being worked on the whole time 13 and 13-2 was released and stuff. They're still being worked on as we speak. The only game taking some the manpower though is 14 ps3 version.

That totally goes against what the topic is about though. XII's sequel was right after. X-2 right after X. If VII's was so blantantly overrated as suggested, it would have had its sequels done right away. There was no milking of VII in it's peak of popularity in the era of its release; in its gen period. That's the point. Same with FF IV and it's sequel many years later.
XIII is being milked while there are NO other main FF's coming out, let alone main S-E games coming out on the main consoles besides DQX which wasn't even localized (and who knows if the Wii U version will be).Get your facts straight. Versus and 14 were being worked on the whole time 13 and 13-2 was released and stuff. They're still being worked on as we speak. The only game taking some the manpower though is 14 ps3 version.
You get your facts straight. FF XIV in TOTAL (PC & PS3) is taking up ridiculous amount of financial budget. This is partially why FF XIII is being milked; to recoup costs in the meantime.
Versus XIII's focus is put in the backburner because they can churn out these sequels in a much shorter time with a smaller budget, and they know XIII despite its initial sales, has a bad word of mouth, hence the effort in 'fixing it's faults' with XIII-2 (even though they made a whole new list of new ones in the process).
And Wada is so stubborn he refuses to call XIV a total loss and is banking so much effort into revamping the game in the hopes to win back the disgusted MMO players that abandoned it despite not even realizing that by releasing XIV, he is in a sense competing against himself with the continued support and releases of FF XI.
Doubtful MMO players will jump ship from one to the next and does he really want that; also doubtful that they'll be able to pull back many of the players who quit, so they're hoping to get PS3 players? Really?
When the East is all playing handhelds and smart phone games and the West are all playing WRPG's and shooters? okay....
Lastly, Versus is their final ace in the sleeve; and they won't release any release date let alone any info until FF XIV and XIII LR are released as well as DQ X Wii U as to not pull away interest on those games because everyone knows Versus is the real game people want; not these lame quick cash in sequels and failed MMO retries.
S-E will only release so many games under a single fiscal year. Every time a XIII sequel came out or XIV was delayed, that pushed back Versus potential release date window.
If Wada didn't force XIV so early and didn't try to milk out XIII with these garbage sequels, and wanted Versus to be released earlier, then he would have. It's all about the budget and the manpower effort and allocating everything.
Theyre not going to release XIV, XIII-LR, DQX, and Versus all within the same fiscal year (while also releasing a final XI expansion and several published Eidos titles). That's cannibalism to them. They're already partially doing it as it is..

They came out years after the game was released, and the game itself was almost universally praised. FFXIII obviously has nowhere near the same appeal as FFVII had, but FFXIII is getting two direct sequels that are based on the original games template.

So? They need money. It saves money. Making Toriyama work on a next gen game could backfire again, like in the PS2 era when he started to make XIII and it had to be scrapped. - Jan 2, 2013 6:17 am GMTCeles--Chere posted...

If this is their strategy to make money, it is amazingly myopic, and just plain crazy.
Like, how did he - or whoever - pitch the idea for FFXIII-2?
"It will star Serah, remember her from FFXIII? She did pretty much ****ing nothing. And LIGHTNING will be like this uber-god now, but, and here's the best part, we'll pretend that she'll be the MC for like the whole pre-prod period, but then we'll make her playable for like 15 minutes! LOL!"
They're heading down a slippery slope, and if Atlus ever gets the money that they deserve, FF runs the risk of losing it's prestige forever.

Ya, I like thinking, i love puzzle games! I just thought those parts really killed the pacing of the game, it was just busy work.
AC is just fan service, it is in no way a good movie. It barely captures the charm or characterization of the game.. 33% on rottentomatoes. - Jan 2, 2013 1:54 pm GMTDevilman_Amon posted...

He acknowledged 14 failure and want to fixed it. Doesn't make him bad. He's at least trying his chance at redemption for 14.
I never said anything about a possible release date. But if I recall they did release a trailer back in 2011 when 13-2 was being worked on. So to say they won't release info anytime next year is BS. I am expecting an E3 trailer of Versus because we are long overdue for info about this game. Also then whole reason for the sequel is because of Versus. Versus didn't push anything back. They simply haven't fully worked on Versus until late 2011. A game on the scale that they decided it as seem like it need another year. Also it is becoming clearer that Versus will release on 2014 since we are at the end of a gen.
