Just curious, since I'm playing SMT1 right now.
They're all on equal levels, every SMT shines above the others in their own little ways. For example, DDS has characters, SMT2 has plot, Nocturne has gameplay, Strange Journey is.....Strange Journey, you get the idea.
In regards to SMT1, I'd really love to play that game. Did you get a translation somewhere?

Yeah, apparently a much better one without the bugs in the Aeon Genesis translation:
