DUKE NUKEM FOREVER IS COMING. But for now...play this.

Duke Nukem is one of the most important video game characters in PC Gaming history. 3D Realms broke all the rules when they released a Swarzenneger clone, with an American accent, steroid abuse, strip club hanging foul-mouthed tough attitude named DUKE NUKEM.
The game added sexuality, humor and abrasiveness to what would have otherwise been a DOOM clone.
Duke Nukem 3D for 800 gamerpoints is exactly what I expected. Its an OLD PC game that I owned on PC and owned for Playstation. Unfortunately, this game is the same as the PC version, and lacks some of the updates the Playstation version got such as the PLUG & PRAY episode which had very challenging maps and very difficult boss lineups. The music remixes were also better on Playstation.
While those who never played both versions on the PC and PS won't notice the difference, what will be noticed right away is the horrible contrast between pixel enemies and sharp, angular, 3D backgrounds without bump/texture mapping. This game is very, very retro. In fact, Game Boy SP and Nintendo DS have more than enough power to run this game in resolutions the PC version ran in.
Getting hit is all too easy. Many enemies have hit/scan weapons that hit you as soon as they are fired in your direction and are impossible to dodge effectively. In hard difficulty, enemies spawn into the map seemingly on top of you and no matter how many you kill, more will be right where you thought you had just cleared.
In its defense, the game's still fun, still has the classic puzzles and hidden secrets right where PC gamers left em, and the XBL integration will give young players the incentive to beat the game and collect XBL achievments.
There is Multiplayer over XBL with purchase of the full version. You can play with others, but, its definitely not as fun as a modern FPS such as Halo3 or CoD4.
There is also a new time warp system that allows you to rewind your death so you can avoid dying and do things a little differently if you get killed.
The classic weapons are fun to play with. The RPG and Devastator still kick but, the game definitely could benefit from some sharpening up. What would really be fun is LOCATION BASED DAMAGE and GORE rendering like the original "Soldier of Fortune"
THe Humor, fortunately is still intact. The "Pig Cops" still have their L.A.R.D uniforms, and pressing the action button in front of a stripper still causes her to flash her breasts and shake. Somehow, digitized whores that react to "inputs" are more exciting than internet porn.
If Duke Nukem Forever finally is released this year, which seems likely considering the teasers you can find online, it will bring DUKE into the HD era and probably be a great game.
We can only hope.
